I've been part of a D&D campaign every other Sunday for the past year and a half now. We just decided to drop Out of the Abyss for feeling too linear and being too punishing. We're starting a brand new custom campaign this Sunday, which is going to share a world with the DM's other group, the IRL one they run on weekends opposite ours. We all know each other online so it's gonna be really cool to share a world with two separate campaigns.

assuming you don't have friends who are into D&D, if you want to play in person, what you want to do is look up any local hobby shops that sell tabletop rpg products and look for groups. Adventurer's league is sort of the wotc sponsored version that you can drop in and play if you don't or can't commit to a full campaign, but you can probably find a game by talking to the store owners/employees or people hanging around the store as well.

if you're okay with online, here's a couple of ways
reddit's got a subreddit for people looking for groups at https://www.reddit.com/r/lfg/
roll20.net is a website you can play on where you can search for games (i forget if you need an account to do this, but you can make a free account if you do)

D. I played DnD with some friends a couple years ago, and did a couple online sessions last year during quarantine, but getting people together is too much of a hassle to fully commit to a full campaign.

never been a fan of tabletop rpgs, but i've been a boardgamer since i was a toddler (and a player of good boardgames since the middle 2000s), and dozens of ccgs since 1995. i'm facinated by minis games, but i just don't have a head for the tactics necessary to be good at them.
