Featuring Dante From The Devil May Cry Series

https://opencritic.com/game/11304/shin-megami-tensei-iii-nocturne-hd-remaster

81 through 18 reviews so far. Nocturne is still one of the best JRPGs of the PS2 era and the HD upgrade looks great, but reviewers were disappointed it didn't go further to justify the "remaster" part of the title. The most significant changes are being able to pick which abilities cross over when you fuse demons and the addition of voice acting during cutscenes, but other than that there isn't much. You also have the choice between Raidou or Dante. There's also an easy mode if you find the game too challenging, but it makes it so easy the game loses some of its magic. Both of those last two things were DLC in the japanese version, but these reviews make it sound like it's just included in the english version. I guess we'll find out.

Destructoid - 9/10
Straight up, Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster could have used more technical improvements. The subtle mechanical changes make it a better game without fundamentally changing it - which is a great thing because Nocturne never needed to be changed. I just wish the "remaster" part had a little more oomph to sway people who might find it dated.

Push Square - 7/10
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster offers something a bit different here in 2021. By today's standards it's a very hardcore, old school RPG; an adventure that's both unwelcoming and uniquely intriguing - even engrossing once you're invested. But it's also a cult classic that deserves more than this barebones remaster, which does very little to enhance the overall experience - especially for its price tag at release.

NintendoLife - 7/10
Shin Megami Tensei III HD Remaster is indisputably the best way to play this RPG classic, but it's also rather clear that this nearly two-decade-old game is showing its age. An interesting story, enjoyable combat system, and engaging demon recruitment and fusion mechanics make Shin Megami Tensei III well worth your time, but the dated visuals, poor quality music, and occasionally unforgiving mechanics are hold it back from being excellent. We'd give this a recommendation to both longtime fans and newcomers, but with the caveat that you might want to wait for a sale before snapping this up.

Siliconera - 8/10
When one of the original selling points of a game was featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series back in the day, being capable and readily available might be enough. After all, it is still telling a haunting story, making you think both in and out of battle. SMT III Nocturne HD Remaster does what Atlus JRPGs do best, and thats captivate an audience.

RPGamer - 4.5/5
Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster is the return of a top-class game for new generations and old-timers who want to reawaken their inner demons on newer platforms with some quality-of-life enhancements.

Noisy Pixel - 8/10
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster is the definitive way to experience this PS2 classic. The updated visuals, voice acting, and quality-of-life changes make it a must-play for fans both new and returning. There are some heavy and impactful moments of storytelling telling here that have aged incredibly well, with the only downside being not having enough money to fuse demons for a Yaksini or Loki.

$50 seems like a pretty absurd ask for what this is. It's nice that they added voice acting and manual skill selection to fusion but this otherwise seems like a weak port compared to P4G on Steam which was sold for $20 despite being a much more recent game.

The graphics are largely updated and there is voice acting as you noted, while P4G was just a straight port. But I do still agree that $50 is straight up atlus seeing what they can get away with on atlus tax

Eh Id say it feels pretty normal these days. Nintendo definitely fond of doing almost no extra work and charging full prices for their HD rereleases for example

P4G is indeed largely a straight port but it does run with an uncapped frame rate. This version of Nocturne is capped at 30 fps on all platforms. (Well, unless the modding scene is able to figure something out.)

When you consider Atlus would charge $50 for 3DS games, it's actually surprising they're not charging the full $60 for this.

Games feel pretty affordable right now actually as long as you set a rule not to pay retail price for anything. (Which is pretty easy considering there are myriad opportunities to get even brand new titles for ~$45, never mind the deeper discounts that always follow 6-12 months later.)

Just wait till Black Friday if the price bothers you.

P5R went for $20 last November

I never imagined any of these characters with voices but even hearing them now it's kind of weird
