I will say that this is likely going to be the grayest area for this in entertainment, and my answer is that if there is an important aspect of a major character in a work, then you can only do service to the work itself by using someone who has actually lived that aspect of the character.

What the hell about it is even remotely gray? There's no real justification for letting orientation get in the way of acting.

Which is a nonsensical argument given how many gay men play straight parts. In fact, some of them play ladies' men, such as Neil Patrick Harris as Barney in How I Met Your Mother.

I suppose in theory it doesn't matter but why not cast a gay person if you can.

The only counter example I have is that NPH from How I Met Your Mother does not feel natural as Barney at all. I'm not a devout fan of the show; I've only seen a handful of episodes, and Barney always felt like a very shallow character compared to the others (and not shallow as in 'only cares about sex' but shallow as a character overall). Once I learned the actor was gay, it made way more sense, but I'm not sure if NPH is a bad actor or if he legitimately didn't get how to act straight.

This is the definition of fake outrage. If these people weren't getting mad that a straight man is playing a gay man, they'd be getting mad at a White woman wearing dreadlocks or a Black woman straightening her hair.

It's acting.

The only reason it's wrong to play a member of another race is because there's a history of denigrating people and because casting was often selectively omissive. It shouldn't be a slippery slope where we stop and act like every group is marginalized if an outsider plays one of them. Besides, LGBTQ actors play heterosexual characters all the time. Just like atheists play religious characters and British actors play American characters.

This is looking for an excuse to get angry.

You just cant win sometimes. People forget that there was a time that the vast majority of people were not willing to accept gay characters.

Having straight actors play these toles helped normalize them to people.
