Because I trust the American public. Because if everyone was armed, you must trust them to behave in a responsible way. And vice versa. That's simply the problem is that nobody has faith in their fellow Americans anymore. But I do. I would even arm you on this board if I could. If guns were made illegal, criminals, (people who commit illegal acts), would just get illegal guns. Not to mention, a disarmed populace can't protect themselves from a tyrannical government. Nothing illegal about them. 2 standard pump action 12 gauges, and an AR-15. No modifications, standard ammo, and a few 30 round magazines for my AR-15. Now let's say 30 round magazines are made illegal. I would not turn mine in, therefore, I would become a criminal.
