I didn't even know it was happening. Did any movies even come out in the last year? I can't name one.

No I dont even know what movies were nominated

I know Ive heard a ton of buzz about Judas and the Black Messiah, but I procrastinated and didnt watch it while it was on HBO

if that doesnt win itll probably be Nomadland which I have also not watched, some black and white French movie that is more pretentious than good, or a Korean film that might be good but that nobody has yet heard of

I haven't given a damn about the Oscars since just before I moved out of my folks' place eleven years ago. Before that, interest had been waning.

Pretty much this. The 70s, 80s and 90s were great for the Oscars. Started going down the shitter in the 2000s

Wow. 41 votes and not a single "yes". Not a single honest watcher, troll vote, or accidental top option voter? That's pretty impressive.

Even then they were kind of shit. The main difference is that, when you're younger and dumber, you actually believe the idea that the Oscars are an objective recognition of quality film-making, as opposed to an over-politicized circle jerk. So your memory of them is rosier than the reality actually was.

Right. You are tricked into believing in the prestige. You are told about memorable moments, of which maybe some are actually enjoyable (albeit scripted). And then we grow older, wiser, with our own sense of objectives.

Our generation in particular--the same generation being blamed for markets crashing that, to be quite honest, are overly expensive after considering inflation--wizening up to the Oscars not actually being a good reflection of filmmaking quality has resulted in less people watching each year. Like I recall passing some news on Reddit this morning about this year's being the lowest-rated in quite some time, or something like that? I feel like those who'd been duped for life are are gone or departing this mortal coil, while the rest of us are finally deciding, "No, we want actual quality, and good movies to watch, not a social gathering of self-absorbed movie makers rewarding themselves like that Obama meme."

That's how I'm seeing it right now.

IMO all the best picture winners for the past 10 years have been a joke. It's not that the movies themselves are bad, but they don't have the same timeless quality old "best picture" category winners used to have. Hollywood turned to utter shit since 2014 lol

Oscars, like the Grammys or any other industry circlejerk awards, are more of a promotional tool than a reflection of true quality and prestige. That all being said, sometimes I agree with the Oscars. Like this year, from their shortlist of nominees Nomadland was my favorite and Frances McDormand is my favorite actress. Ignoring their shortlist, I probably would have chosen I'm Thinking of Ending Things as Best Picture myself. But yeah, I don't really give a shit about the Oscars, I don't watch them, and whether something wins or loses or whatever with the Oscars has no bearing on if I'll see it. The only effect the Oscars has on my viewing habits is if it happens to bring to my attention a film I wasn't aware of before (which is fairly rare considering I follow the festival circuit).

The last "Best Picture" I liked even a little bit was Slumdog Millionaire in 2008, but that was a movie I could only take watching once. The last "Best Picture" I liked enough to keep watching repeatedly was Return of the King in 2003. The early 90s saw a couple such films I rewatched. So yeah, you might say I tend not to care about this category unless there's a wager involved, and I haven't had one of those related to the Oscars since . . . 2009. Once those wagers stopped, my interest in the Oscars stopped.

Just looking at the lists of winners and nominees and I'm kind of shocked by the nothingness there. And that they seemed to have doubled the list of nominees in 2009 is kind of a sad attempt to give more clout to mediocre movies.
