And not scifi hacker, but like a real hacker. Do things like social engineering, or leaving a usb drive to try and install malware or something.

well, I guess it's "sci-fi" hacking, but ExaPunks and other Zachtronics games. program nanobots (with "real" assembly instructions) to do various things, in some cases hacking into your own body to do things like mod your vision. (not quite as amazing as that sounds, but definitely fun and probably the best Zachtronics programming game).

the other programming games are less "hacking" but also great:

Shenzhen I/O: work for a Chinese company building and programming small electronics devices (with "real" assembly language running in the chips and problems with synching and having enough space for all of the conections)

TIS-100: solve various problems using a mysterious very old computer that you found and booted up. this one is the least good IMO, but the other two are fantastic.

all three of these are similar, where you solve 'puzzles' using extremely constrained assembly language code, and also have to properly synchronize each separate component. you only get like 10-15 lines per component, so just a simple loop can take up a good chunk of your available space.

(also note that both ExaPunks and Shenzhen are a lot better if you print out the PDF documents they come with)

There was a game called Hacker that came with no instructions because you wouldn't have them if you were really breaking into somebody's computer system. You weren't doing anything to make ordinary people's lives miserable, though.

Well, I mean none of the games truly capture the perfectly identical experience of hacking in the real world. Similar to most games where you say fly a fighter jet it's always altered a bit to make it more fun.

It's just far more authentic than what you see in movies where someone types frantically for 2 minutes and boom they are "in".

Sure, my point was it still isn't as difficult and time consuming as truly hacking. I also recommended that exact game in this very thread. Another aspect of hacking that they usually don't capture is the human element, a show like Mr. Robot shows that in great detail showing that a good portion of hacking is contacting people to get information to help you hack.
