Either as Mario or Luigi, any platform.

This game is frustrating as hell. They made the right decision to not localize it honestly.

No, I tried playing it as a kid when I had Mario All Stars but I remember it being way too hard. That poison mushroom at the beginning definitely got me a few times just because it was instinctual due to similar layout of the first level of the first game and my reflexes kept making me get it and I'd always get pissed

I might see if adult me can tackle that game now that I think about it.

I made it to World 9 once, but gave up. I just remember clouds and Hammer Bros. in flat areas, and a serious dearth of power-ups. Hope you got through 8-4 as Fire Mario, 'cause otherwise you're dancing through hammers and hoping you didn't screw up the timing on your jump(you will).

That could have just been World 8 though, but I can swear I remember being weirded out by there being a 9th world.

I beat it on all stars. I recall that if you ran out of lives youd just restart the last level rather than going to the beginning of the world again so that helped.

Was it part of Super Mario Deluxe for the GBC? Because if that's what those levels were, then yes I beat it.

It did, but you didnt have to beat the game 8 times to get there or whatever the absurd thing in the original was.

You just had to not use warps IIRC

Or maybe I'm thinking if the A-D worlds

You just had to not use warps.

World A-D are the "beat game 8 times" and they're accessed separately from the main game.

I've never actually beaten a Super Mario Bros or Zelda game. The closest I've ever come was getting to the final castle in New Super Mario Bros (DS) >_>

I've beaten it legitimately. This is the SNES version. I have no means of playing the Famicom version. I doubt I would've made it far in that one. Though I am curious how the sprites compare to the original Mario.

The FDS version is on the game and watch system which I'm playing now and the enemies / mario are mostly the same but the terrain is all different. I made it to 9-2 x_x

6 more times to unlock world A.

This game is so unfair.

The FDS version still goes to D-4 but you had to beat the game 8 times in one sitting.

SNES All Stars the game just flows directly into world 9 / A and you get a save at every level. It also has slightly better physics.

The FDS version is way harder.

I have had it installed on my Wii since it was released on the Virtual Console. I've tried many times but never beat it and I consider myself a decent Super Mario player.

The puzzle levels are pretty wack and the hidden block trolling by the developers is not appreciated. At least I get to play as my dude, Luigi.

There's way too many endless mazes and too few powerups with lots of them being in invisible blocks.

It doesn't have to be in one sitting. The game keeps track of how many times you beat it.

One of the appeals of the original FDS hardware was the ability to save, the version of Metroid on it had save slots instead of the unwieldy passwords

I kinda wish they would have just skipped the original famicom and give us the FDS straight away. By the time the NES went international, Japan was getting the FDS. They could have just made the FDS a worldwide release instead.
