https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2021-02-17/newsom-covid-19-stimulus-agreement-legislature
Gov. Gavin Newsom and legislative leaders announced Wednesday that they have agreed to provide low-income Californians a $600 state stimulus payment to help them weather financial hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic, part of a $9.6-billion economic recovery package that also includes $2.1 billion in grants for small businesses.

The Golden State stimulus payments provided under the state proposal, which will be expedited for legislative approval next week, are in addition to the $600-per-person stimulus checks already approved by Congress and would be on top of direct payments of up to $1,400 per person that have been proposed by House Democrats.

This is good, but its pathetic that states should have to be the ones covering this.

And both of those are under the bigger statement of Its pathetic that so little is being given.

IIRC, Jerry Brown left a $21 billion surplus as a "rainy day fund". It's pouring.

Looking even better:
In addition, the agreement would provide a stimulus check to taxpayers with individual tax identification numbers who did not receive federal stimulus payments.

States should have always been the ones covering safety-nets, with only the occasional "ohshit disaster" block-grant being federal.

The state budget is more than $200 billion though. They probably need some of that money to keep the state operating.

$600 seems very generous to me

Last two polls (October and January), Newsom's approval was between 60-65%.

The recall effort is fueled by antivaxxers, Proud Boys and QAnon types. They actually disrupted a vaccination at Dodger Stadium. The LAPD let them waltz right in.

Getting 1.5 million signatures for a proposition in CA is easy. 1.5 million is roughly 3.75% of the population.

The signatures are based on the election votes. The last guy that got recalled only needed 800k signatures

Yeah, it's IMO too easy get something on the ballot here. 40 million. I have received ballots with propositions regarding eating of horse flesh and mandatory use of condoms in porn.

Sometimes the proposition page is 2X bigger than the candidates running for office.

At the time, a guy who was totally unserious, ran a gag campaign. IF EATING HORSE FLESH IS OUTLAWED, ONLY OUTLAWS WILL EAT HORSE FLESH. With a picture of infamous outlaws - riding a horse.

IIRC that proposition was fueled by people who saw Horse Whisperer and became upset that some people -indigenous to CA- were eating horse meat.

The US is blowing every other country out of the water when it comes to pandemic relief, yet the narrative online is the exact opposite. People seem to think the US is spending too little.

It's crazy how effective the internet is for spreading misinformation.

Well, yeah, but that's (partially)because we have less of a safety net in regular times. Which has made it harder to get effective stimulus to people who need it.

https://time.com/5923840/us-pandemic-relief-bill-december/

But as a percent of GDP, the U.S. relief strategy still hasnt been as aggressive as that of some other countries, according to a team of economists at universities in New York, South Korea and Turkey, who are following 168 nations fiscal and monetary responses to the pandemic. Their analysis shows that U.S. fiscal relief spending prior to the latest package was about 14% of GDP. The new package is likely to bump that ratio up, to roughly 18% of GDP. But that still puts the country behind other economically advanced economies like Japan (42% of GDP), Slovenia (25%) and Germany (20%).

While the above chart shows how much financial weight each country has thrown behind its relief measures, it cant show how effective that relief has been in stabilizing each economy. In the U.S., for example, the national poverty rate has risen faster than ever, due in part to lapses in economic relief after certain CARES Act provisions expired. Many European countries, meanwhile, had existing safety nets set up well before the pandemic that helped to cushion the blow for many affected residents.

Just the size of the package is never enough, says Ceyhun Elgin, lecturer at Columbia University and professor of economics at Bogazici University in Turkey and one of the aforementioned researchers. The content is what matters. Theres large variation in terms of how countries responded in the labor market. In some countries, there is support for parents whose kids are not in school. Others have direct food support, or compensation for sick workers.

I know they eat it there and in Spain. Never saw horse on a menu in Italy, but I saw it in a market in Spain. The story I hear is that if your horse died in Medieval times, you're not going to waste the meat.
