It's a valid excuse because if multiple games in a franchise are selling poorly, then it's too much of a risk to invest money and resources in another one when there's a strong chance it won't earn a profit
The problem with this excuse is theyve gotten into the habit of seemingly purposefully making garbage games for franchises they want an excuse to kill off and then acting surprised when sales tank. All of them have a formula that would work, Nintendo just refuses to do anything with it.

We didn't see a single mention of Donkey Kong, Kirby, FZero, Mother, Star Fox, Chibi Robo, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Game and Watch, Wario, Yoshi, etc. Hell, not even Pokemon

Nintendo has the biggest wealth of IPs of any game company out there, and all they have to show us is fucking Mario Golf and Skyward Sword HD? This is what's truly upsetting about Nintendo shutting down fan projects. They'll sit on IPs that people love for years, sometimes decades, doing nothing with them, but wont allow fans to enjoy them via their own creations. It's truly mind boggling

Its a smart business model imo.

My theory has always been that Nintendo was trying to prevent us from getting tired of their franchises. So theyd skip Metroid a generation, theyd skip star Fox too, etc. at most they would give us spin off games (I dont consider the stuff like Metroid generation or the latest star Fox game or dino planet as true sequels).

but they have left Metroid and star Fox virtually untouched, they gave us Zelda burnout when SS was new (only BOTW managed to make Zelda exciting again) and Mario was kind of in a slump until odyssey.

so what is their big idea? Are they really out of ideas of what to do with punch out, Metroid, star Fox and other franchises like that?

part of me wanted to think BOTW was going to be the true Wii U killer app, but then it ended being a switch game, by then the switch was out and botw couldnt be a Wii U selling point.

it seems once again we wont get a Zelda killer app for the current Nintendo console, as botw was low enough in specs to run in the Wii U and whenever botw 2 is out it will be close to the end of the switch life span.

nintendos lack of direction when it comes to its franchises made the Wii U fail, among other things. They corrected the path a little bit with the switch, but I feel theyre regressing now

The mistakes go back about ten years, when they released nothing for a whole calendar year other than Skyward Sword. Nintendo should have taken all that Wii profit when the fad was clearly losing steam and started buying up more partner studios to reliably pump out their franchise games. Nobody knows where that money went.

If anything, all these posts focusing on Chibi Robo is proof TC is mostly on the mark. All these same fanboys arguing with the TC would have been getting hype and they know it, that's what makes me laugh the most.

like several other people have mentioned, many of the other franchises have been getting games at a steady clip, and only taking a few years off is hardly the worst thing ever or unprecedented for any IP in gaming

the chibi robo thing just stands out because the number of games that franchise has gotten is way higher than I ever expected already. pretty weird to include it on a list with donkey kong

Nintendo is most likely working on those IPs obviously. I agree with the statement of Nintendo not letting more studios work on those IPs though.

Well Pokemon is on Gamefreak, and Pokemon Company.

As for the others are any of the developers for those series even still at Nintendo? Nintendo seems like they tend to keep series under the wing of the initial developer.

Miyamoto, and Sakura are the main people I think of when it comes to that. The IP's they developed are the major ones getting games and content.

The problem is they clearly havent figured out HD development yet, and theyve been further hobbled by not having figured out working from home yet

the reason theyre neglecting those franchises is theyre releasing so few games in the first place. There were two Nintendo developed original games last year. (Three if you count Age of Calamity which I believe they supported)

they used to support two platforms, now theyre supporting one and theyre poised to have another similar year with only two confirmed original games this year through august (Mario Golf lol and Pokemon Snap)

yes, some third parties are picking up some of the slack but Nintendo is truly dropping the ball on support in general. It only makes sense for them to focus on Mario if they only have the capacity for two or three games a year now
