Even when I was a kid in the 90s I groaned whenever old Hanna barbera cartoons like tom + jerry came on. I acknowledge their importance in cartoon history but that doesn't mean they aren't still boring as hell

I'm mostly talking about cartoons from like the 60s and 70s. Their more modern remakes also tend to be bad though IMO

Old school Tom and Jerry wasn't even a show, it was theatrical shorts. They also still rule.

I haven't seen things like Betty Boop, so I can't really talk about how good they are. Are they better than Hanna Barbera cartoons?

Sometime around the 60s, animation started getting very, very stingy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKYlitlKN6c
The animation-age-ghetto was in full swing, and the assumption was that kids won't care how crappy it is, so long as something moved around and made noises long enough to keep the kids out of mom's hair for half an hour or so.

Then there's the really weird Tom & Jerry run, that was made in Czechoslovakia to cut costs.

Fleischer shorts, especially the pre-code ones, were intended for viewing by adults. They weren't farted out to run breakfast cereal ads.

Basically the quality declined during the beginning of television. Hanna-Barbera were fantastic in the 40s and 50s, but their cartoons of the 60s through the 80s were incredibly cheap with lackluster writing. It was about quantity in a lower budget and burgeoning medium, and the animation studios needed to focus more on churning out products quickly.

this is very untrue.

you can watch stuff like Tom and jerry or coyote and roadrunner as an adult and still chuckle.

modern stuff is for kids and kids only and seems dumb to grown ups

There were a lot of cartoons from the 50's-60's that were trippy as hell (actually I don't know when they were made, I'm just assuming - they had, like, stick figures in them). Old Looney Tunes was good though. I also liked Popeye, which was old as all get out.

I'll give you Hanna barbera as they were designed to be cookie cutter

But looney tunes are still quality. Turn it on today and you'll find loads of humor you didn't see as a kid

Yeah, almost anything before the era of television is incredible. And Hanna-Barbera made most of the great Tom and Jerry cartoons in the 40s (And Hanna was actually the voice of Tom). But once that medium got going, nearly every studio felt cheap and bland.

Jay Ward Productions at least had some clever writing, but the animation still wasn't great.
