Getting into ivy league is more about your family having money than it is about your intellect and achievements.

Had a friend get into Princeton on academics/extracurricular activities (had some published research).

I went to Johns Hopkins (Ivy parallel like Stanford etc) but I think someone mixed things up in admissions :p

Are you referring to bribery? Because a standard college application doesnt inquire about your financial ability to pay.

And technically I go to a school thats referred to as a public ivy but that description is loose fitting and kind of a joke.

Yes
I was a janitor at one. I'd write random shit all over professor's white boards when they'd leave up math problems that they couldn't solve. For some reason they thought I was a genius or some shit.

Ivy League schools reserve a certain number of seats for the children of parents that went to that college as well as the children of people who donated money to them.

I went to an Ivy League for grad school, and I'd say it's mostly merit based, outside of legacy admissions and such. I am definitely not from a rich family.

The thing is, though, the things that help improve your "merit" definitely favor the rich. Extra curriculars, AP tests, study abroads, high school internships. Even knowing about these things is an advantage the upper classes tend to have because they the parents are more likely to have went to college and know how it works.

No, I didnt even try. I went to the state school that I got a free ride to (merit based free ride). No debt coming out of university was much more important to me.
