I had pictures somewhere where he was sitting next to me in my crib when I was a baby, so he watched over me, and then about 13-14 years later he got older and slowed down.... I'll never forget the night died. He used to always lie at the foot of my bed but that night I had to help him up, and he had enough energy to walk towards my arms and lie down instead of going to the foot of the bed. He just started almost immediately having difficulty breathing and I knew what was happening so I just kept petting him and he just finally let out one last gasp of air.... I never thought you could really have a serious connection with a pet but I know for sure that you can.
