It's not really that implausible for someone to stumble upon it by accident. You go to Kakariko Village and many people on their first playthrough would probably talk to everyone. People might think to wake up Talon because of the fact that you already did it once with the chicken and would cause one to wonder about Lon Lon Ranch if they had not already visited it and stumbled upon Epona. One is going to go to the Lost Woods soon after that and might think to use the blue Cucco on that guy since it crows when you enter the area. Really, the limiting factor is if a player going in blind realizes that they can jump the bridge in Gerudo's Valley with Epona, otherwise they might wait to use the Longshot. The 1 thing that's remained consistent in every game is the concept of exploring to find/upgrade better gear. I think Zelda 1 and 2 are bad games so it's moot there Caroniver posted...
