Pizza would have been a better example. Pizza having so many calories is proof God doesnt exist.

Because there is more to health when it comes to calories than how many go in and come out.

The biggest thing most people never know is that when it comes to food and calories, there's a whole metric ton of information that ties into all aspects of the endocrine system. Different foods have different amounts of "calories" depending on the macronutrient. Different foods, vitamins, minerals and chemicals also affect people's individual physiology in certain ways, such as hormones and catecholamines and their relationships between different organs like the brain, heart, liver, pancreas, etc.

You burn a good amount of calories just by existing, exercise is just an extra bonus

a calorie is just a unit of measurement

for one, fitness trackers never do a good job of reading caloric burn of intake because they cant truly do that, its all estimates.

I'm going to complicate things for you.

There's something called a Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) which is how many calories you use just to live and breathe. This is loosely based on your height, weight, age, and gender.

Then there is your daily caloric needs, which basically multiplies your BMR by a certain number based on your lifestyle (like for a sedentary person, their BMR would be multiplied by 1.2 (I think) to give the number you actually use in the day).

Simply put, if the calories you take in via food and drink is greater than the calories you need (your daily caloric need + whatever you burn by exercising), you gain weight. If you eat 3,500 more calories than you burn (over whatever period of time), you gain a pound of fat. Viceversa for losing fat.

Now, things do get more complicated based on a variety of factors, but TBH it's not that important for the every day person to know.

Edit: calculators for this stuff are a dime a dozen online, just google it.
