When I watched it again a year and a half ago I found it merely mind-numbingly boring instead, albeit not as bad as Roger Ebert found it (he gave it 1 star and named it the worst movie of 1998, I'd probably give it the lower end of 2 stars and it is DEFINITELY not as bad as that year's Godzilla movie). Admittedly I don't like Independence Day either. I want to like it, but Emmerich's films feel so unimaginative to me. He's like George Lucas with less talent. Also Bay's movies have been accused of being racist and misogynistic for a while now, whether deservedly or not. The kind of teenage fantasy Bay revels in just doesn't sell anymore. I always find it amusing when people use the phrase "Get woke, go broke" when based on Bay and Adam Sandler being banished to Netflix, if anything the complete opposite is more true.
