The author definitely understands war, history, propoganda, generational grudges, and he presents all of it in a fictional story with some really strong characters. He really gets you to see both sides. I'm all caught up on the manga. Truth be told I don't care much about the anime for whatever reason. I can see why people say it feels kinda like filler.
