Board 8 > Best movie of 2020?

Last year was a spectacularly dismal year in film, for obvious reasons. Usually I watch at least 2 or 3 per year that I'd consider excellent, but so far the best I've seen is the merely "very good" Promising Young Woman.

What else does everyone else have? Snobby answers are greatly appreciated.

Its release year may be a little arguable (wide theatrical was 2020) but I think it's Synchronic, awesome sci-fi horror film about the effects of a drug that physically transports you back in time. Lots of heady concepts and great commentary of aspects on our current culture.

some solid ones were Da 5 Bloods, Palm Springs and David Copperfield. Most of the Oscary movies I haven't gotten to see yet

most underrated so far is Scare Me

Any particular reason? I love his stuff typically

meanwhile two other directors I normally enjoy a lot (Nolan and Fincher) both kinda disappointed me this year

He's definitely a screenwriter who benefits from partnering with a skilled director. When left to his own devices (Synecdoche, this one) his films are somehow both nonsensical and uninteresting to me. I can't really explain it beyond that and I don't think he's "bad" per se, but I really just hate his movies. I also happen to be the only person who dislikes eternal sunshine so

i will say being john malkovich is vastly overrated. it's fine but i don't see what the big deal is.

adaptation and eternal sunshine are amazing, though.

lol funny enough I actually prefer SNY and ITOET to the films he's just a screenwriter for (though I do love those as well)

Wolfwalkers was my favorite film from this year. First Cow, Soul, and Da 5 Bloods were also fantastic. I've heard great things about Nomadland and Minari so I'm looking forward to their streaming releases.
