The new era of Yakuza is off to great start! Ever since it got revealed as an "April Fools" joke I've been looking forward to this new turn based direction on the series. Kiryu had a great run and I was excited to see what they would do with it. Despite being worried early on if Ichiban was going to be suitable replacement for Kiryu, he quickly won over the hearts and minds of everyone myself included. If Kiryu was basically a Kenshiro type (which he was!) then Ichiban is more of a Goku type. He makes friends out of everyone and is goofy and loveable while doing it. The entire cast is really a step above what the series has offered in the past and it was apparent whenever they would run into older characters in the series seemed to be lacking depth in comparison. I think it's a credit to the localization which I think is one of the best I've ever seen in a video game. These games have had pretty good localizations ever since Yakuza 0, but it seemed a step above even that. I went with the English voice acting this time because everyone said it was so good and it didn't disappoint.

The battle system was good, but there's definitely room for improvement in Yakuza 8 if they choose to continue on with Ichiban. Character's frequently got stuck in geometry during battle and you have to wait for them to teleport to the enemy once they realize they can't get there and there seemed to be some wild balance issues in the back half of the game. However the actual combat is fast, the jobs are fun and the skills are entertaining to see. Being turn based the moves maybe lose a bit of their brutal intensity compared to Heat Actions in the old games, but they make up for it with JRPG anime wackiness for all the abilities. The most important part is it still managed to feel like I was playing a Yakuza game despite the change to the battle system.

The Platinum is a pretty long one I think only Yakuza 5 was longer. Overall it took me 104 hours to complete. A lot of it is typical Yakuza stuff beyond finishing the story like doing a ton of substories, playing a ton of minigames (and completing the 3 big new ones: Part-Time Hero, running a business and Dragon Kart) and crafting a ton of weapons and equipment. There's a ton of new ones though that are out of other rpgs like Persona where you have to max the bond levels of all your party members or Dragon Quest where you have to get a honk-honk (puff puff) from all the various women around town. The romance stuff is also straight out of Persona 5 including everyone finding out you're dating all the women at the end.

There's a big post-game bonus dungeon though where you need to raise your character level and job level to 99 (and it doesn't hurt to have learned the basic elemental skills in the other jobs as well) to even survive so I spent a decent amount of time grinding the game's equivalent of Metal King Slimes in the sewers just for that. Even then enemies can kill you in 1-2 hits and you have to be constantly healing and exploiting enemy weaknesses to survive. It felt satisfying to finally finish that dungeon though and get the platinum.

Definitely looking forward once again to what they do next whether it's Yakuza 8 with more Ichiban or something else.

The estimated average is 60-80 hours

I assume these people just skip all the cutscenes

How do you get the trophy notifications to pop up on the left of the screen like that? For me it's still just the standard top right corner despite being on PS5.

I was the final Undisputed Champion in UCA history,
but azuarc was our Guru Champion!

The upper right is where they are when they pop in-game, but when you have it set to automatically take trophy screenshots that's how they appear for me in the gallery

HI Ace of Games. I'm currently playing Yakuza 3. Being the oldest non-remade game, it's definitely of the least quality and I'm hoping to get through it pretty quickly before P5 strikers comes out. However, I don't want to miss any worthwhile substories. For example, the couple on the roof from Kiwami 2 have made an appearance in 3 here and it was helpful to have know who they hell they were. None of the minigames seems worthwhile for me to see to completion at first glance, though. Is my Yakuza 3 experience going to be best served mainlining the story for the most part?

that's a tricky one because even if there was no platinum I would still do all substories

minigames were definitely at their worst in Yakuza 3

What party/jobs did you use for the true super final dungeon? I just finished the second to last one and have all the other achievements so I was thinking Id give it a try, although Ill need to grind first
(how do you even get a job level to 99? My dudes are at like 75 normal level, but the jobs are way lower than that even though they wear the job exp boost items like all the time)

Max job level is 30 iirc. You can also get books that raise your job level from Dragon Kart and some other mini-games

My party was Hero Ichiban, Chef Adachi, Musician Chou, and Dancer Joon-gi

edit: upon further research the job level cap was raised when released in the west whoops ignore me

I raised every sub job except my main one to 25-30ish. At first because you kinda want all the elemental spells on every character because Nanba's low HP becomes a hindrance in a dungeon where enemies attack for 1000 damage every turn. Then I kept going for some of the permanent start boosts you get.

After that just leveled up my main classes as high as I could by the time I hit character level 99. In the Kamurocho sewer dungeon there's a save point at the end of B1, then the 3rd fight on B2 has one of the Metal Slime equivalents (vadobond something or other) so it was just running back and forth grinding on that for 400K exp every time. The accessories to boost Job EXP help a ton here because then it's 600K a fight.

By the time my character's all reach 99 my job levels for my main ones were in the 70s. I probably could have had a tiny bit easier time if actually got them into the 90s, but that was good enough I just had a bit of trouble on the final fight of that dungeon having the retry a few times (its the only fight you can retry any others are instant game over go back to the title screen)

For me main classes were

Ichiban Hero
Nanba Homeless Guy
Adachi Enforcer
Saeko Idol
Eri Night Queen
Joon-Gi Han Hitman
Zhao Gangster

My main party was usually Ichiban for damage and healing, Adachi for defense, Joon-Gi Han for speed (he gets 2 turns with how fast he gets) and Saeko for healing exclusively

For that final fight though I eventually sub in the others if I need them and Zhao is great with his AoE ladder attack

Yeah the trophy for beating the true final millennium tower I think is exclusive to the International version

Also it helps to have at least EX versions of everyone's best weapon

They technically go up to EX +9 but the upgrade costs aren't really worth it. I only went that high with Ichiban

Yeah when I think about it again the original max levels were 70 for characters and 30 for jobs which would make that dungeon quite impossible
