Either the state just deducts taxes anyway, or there was a withholding checkbox on the application form.

I knew I had to pay, but I rather have the money on hand and maybe get a tax amendment deduction, than give the fed a interest free loan. I should have had it withheld. I put a portion of each payment in my savings knowing I would pay the taxes back. I didn't count on my job hunt being so unsuccessful.

I was initially not going to withhold but I decided to because I wasn't sure how secure my job would be going forward. I didn't want to gamble on being able to make enough to pay taxes, which was good because my job is long gone at this point and I would've been super fucked if I hadn't. Probably still going to be a little fucked though.
