Would've made sense for Squirtle since it was pretty defiant, or, if it had to be Charizard, have Ash be overzealous with his Charmander usage and props himself as a great trainer despite relying on an overpowered Pokemon. Charmander -> Charizard realizes this, and rebels because it knows it's strong without Ash and ends up not respecting him as a result.
