Happy black history month everyone!

Does anyone know where I can learn about modern inventions by West Africans? (Everything I find is too American centric)

Thank you!

No way SMAL could keep an account for this long, but TC is definitely a weirdo who makes questionable topics.

I got this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_science_and_technology_in_Africa

Apparently they pioneered a lot of techniques in things like metal working and medical tech that we still use today.

Thats pretty cool

okay, Nigeria didn't become independent til the 1960s, so how is this reasonable? Yes there's Mali, but Europeans didn't really come in to actual penetration of the continent until the late 1800s when the region was in steep decline due to slave trade. Mali for example collapsed in the 1460s

Am I missing something? Because the 147th decade was before Columbus crossed the Atlantic, unless you mean the East African Arab trade made it's way to Mali? Perhaps the Barbary pirates?

Mali collapsed due to competing factions of people who were vying for the crown. Different sons of the King who felt they had claim to the throne after the King passed. They were disunited amongst themselves which led to civil wars and due to the turmoil the Songhai were able to take them over.

The Songhai had similar issues late in their reign and then in ther end they were defeated by the Moroccans once the Moroccans came with gunpowder and guns they received by the Europeans

yes Europeans had posts on the coast but Europeans didnt really start penetrating the interior until the late 1800s. I dont think the Niger River was fully explored until 1946, without the dude dying or something.

yes, but the region as a whole suffered under the Atlantic slave trade and by the time you start seeing people like Mungo Park peak in to Africa, the region as a whole is in disarray

Yeah OP specified modern and wanted to aim towards 1700s, at this point West Africa was at a pretty bad state because of the slave trade. There's a good podcast about Mungo Park exploring the Niger and it gives you an interesting account on life there.
