sometimes you'd rather not know something is a lie. On the other hand lying can sparingly be a helpful tool.

I'm not seeing where I'd ever really use that lying ability. I mean a regular old lie will do.

Also keeping up with lies is super stressful.

Human lie detector is by far the better option here.

How often do you guys get lied to in real life?

I'm a fairly good liar and really a lot of the time when "being an extremely talented liar" fails it comes down to there being too much hard evidence that you can't dispute or people have to not believe you for their own sake.

I feel this needs clarification.

For the lie detector one - is it an always-active ability, or will I only know if a given statement is a lie or not if I specifically choose to know? And is it some kind of superhuman "I just know" thing, or am I just really, really good at spotting contradictions / etc?

Likewise for the liar one, do I have a superhuman ability that makes people believe me, or am I just really good at knowing what is or isn't a good lie etc?

That's kinda the point. There's no way to know. If you have that power you would know. Wouldn't necessarily know the truth but you would know that they are lying or being deceitful.

Right, but I'm saying that I don't really think it would be useful that often. There are very few interactions in my life where people are lying/being deceitful that have consequences.

If I wasn't terrible at picking up on lies, I'd go with the talent for lying. But I am, so I'll take the human lie detector, especially online in verifying legitimate insiders versus LARPers.

On investment boards and other degenerate sites; we have legitimate insiders including government officials and other well connected individuals in those communities while at the same time hosting a bunch of people who like to feed false information for funsies. The human lie detector skill would come in handy there.

And of course, IRL, when money is involved, people will fudge information and have fudged information to make things sound nicer. I feel a business deal I was involved in setting up went sour because they saw through my colleague's lies.

I don't know. That's why I want to find out.

I'd rather always be able to detect lies. Even if I don't like the truth, I can learn from or prefer for what I find out.
