It's a military thing. They test you on general military knowledge, regulations, history, chain of command, all that good shit.

I just hate that it's online over video chat, it means that I have to deal with this shit in my home and then regardless of how it goes... I have that negative energy with me in my house. At least if it were in the office I would be able to suck it up, do it, then decompress on the drive home and keep that separation.

@Jagr_68 @E32005 For most awards you don't need to do anything special, but for these types of awards there are actually several nominees, each coming from different departments at the organization. To identify who is the *most* qualified they also do an oral test where they measure your military bearing, physical appearance (there's usually a uniform inspection aspect) and knowledge of the command and current events and history and regulations.

I am particularly torn on this one, since I haven't done anything stellar for this and it's probably the only time in my career I will ever be nominated for something like this. I'd rather have a command that would take a few minutes to listen to me vent about how miserable I am than have a command that puts me up for this just because I'm doing the bare minimum -_-

I think it's a fair way to handle things - if you got nominated and reached this point to begin with then they thought you have what it takes. The test is part subjective (how you conduct yourself, how you answer questions), part objective (providing factual information) so I think it's a more fair process. It's kind of like choosing the face of the command at that paygrade range so they want to choose a person who is professional (lol not me).

This is also how they do qualifications of any kind, you have to be able to show on the fly that you have taken the time to memorize and understand all the information required to earn that qualification.

Army takes it a step further and makes promotions based on board conduct... screw that.

The funny thing is, the last time we had snow, they just canceled in-person work altogether. This time, we have way more snow and they just did a delay start.

But I'm working from home so I just get to enjoy the snow through my window and keep doing what I'm doing

Oh that's right, it makes a whole lot of sense...I think lol? What's confusing is that generally the requirements for such are associated with promotions or a recertification. Wish ya the best of luck on this weird military beauty pageant

It doesn't help that I'm over here trying to cram information and every two minutes my wife has to bring up something - needs help with a grammar check on an e-mail or random comment about her parents' cats that they rescued or like literally everything lmao. It's exhausting.

I know why I get nervous about this shit - it's because almost almost every single time I've gone in front of a room of khakis (E-7s and higher and officers) it's been to get yelled at for something that wasn't even my fault.

So I feel like I'm just being thrown into the lion's den again here. I know that's not the intent of the board but I also know that people in higher paygrades all have stupid pet peeves and tend to have minimal self control so even an innocuous statement can turn into a "why the fuck don't you know that shipmate" kind of stupid commentary for no reason. Even though it's supposed to be a neutral-leaning-to-positive experience.

I won BJotQ last year. I am up for BQotY, but my command has been dragging their feet on it. I dont think they've decided if they want to do a board or not, since we've had several cases of COVID the past couple months.

Well, from what I learned by asking around, it varies by your rank. An E6 is expected to know more than an E3 or E4.

But it was questions about Navy programs, history and heritage, etc.

Its been a year since I did it, so I don't remember every question, but I remember they asked me to name at least one officer commissioning program, what happened on the USS Forrestal and what impact it had on the Navy, which of the first 6 frigates is still in service, what is the Navy's birthday, what kind of program would you like to see in the Navy, etc.

If I didn't know something, I was obliged to say "I dont have that answer at this time, but I'll get back to you with it" I suspect they were more looking at my bearing, uniform, etc.

But I was a lowly E3 and in my first quarter at the command, so they may have taken it easy on me.

I would been hosed on those. I think they really went easy on me, I did break bearing once but it wasn't too bad
