I havent played enough of Sword and Shield to give them a concrete alignment but from what I've seen it's probably between 1 and 5.

7 is the worst imo. It had some good points, including most of the new pokemon being good, but I've never felt less compelled to replay a pokemon game. I also haven't played enough of sword to judge.

I'd probably say 4>2>3>1>6>5>7.

I would need to think on it some though.

Also gen 1 is so broken that most things don't actually work.

Also I wouldn't put gen 3 first either. As much as I like those games personally, the special/physical split that happened in gen 4 was one of the best things to happen to the franchise.

If that was your opinion on 7, 8 will be even worse. Its the same super linear RPG style but with a worse storyline and character development so hamfisted it just bothers you. At least buying the DLC gave you a reason to pick up the game once or twice after you finished it.

Personally I'm 3<2<4<5<6<1<7<8 and I didn't even think Gen 8 was bad.

5 > 4 (if we're including remakes, HG/SS is the best) > 7 > 3 > 8 > 6 > 2 > 1

1 and 2 do have a certain charm though. If you have a means to play them and speed them up, they're better

There were a lot of pretty awesome new pokemon in general 5, but the total lack of familiar faces hurt the experience some for me. White 2 resolved that for me for the most part though. I also kind of enjoyed getting pokemon from the dream world stuff. My wife and I enjoyed doing the mini games together when we were still dating.

Not counting remakes:

If you include remakes:

4 > 5 > 3 > 6 > 2 > 8 > 7 > 1

Aside from Emerald having the Battle Frontier while OR/AS didn't, I think that every single remake is far better overall than their original versions.

Why does everyone love Johto? It's a watered down half a game and the level scaling is terribad. The only reason it isnt last is that it's better then Kalos. Half a game is better than a bloated mess like X and Y.

I haven't played Gen 1 so can't comment on that. And I haven't fully experienced 3 and 4. But it was when I started playing ORAS that I realized I no longer liked Pokemon. Gen 7 reaffirmed that.

The more I look back on it, the clearer it is that Gen 5 is by far the best one.

I like johto because getting badges is one of my favorite parts of the games. In reality there were too many baby pokemon and single stagers who sucked, so only a few new pokemon were actually noteworthy. Team rocket was also pretty pathetic.

So I can see the criticisms, and basically all I can say is "I like it anyway".

Though Gen 1 has aged like milk out in the sun on a hot day.

The wonky level scaling and Kanto being watered down are the only two major flaws, and even that second one was mostly fixed in HG/SS because they added more stuff to do and more Pokemon to catch after you get the National Dex. G/S/C and HG/SS did so much good and very little bad.

* Johto is a great region that looks beautiful and has a lot of freedom.
* Even with Kanto watered down, having 16 gyms to fight and a huge final boss at the end is an awesome experience.
* There are multiple routes you can take to fight gyms in different orders (you can fight Pryce and the Rocket Hideout before Chuck and Jasmine if you want to, and you can fight the 8 Kanto gyms in almost any order) which helps the game still feel fresh even after multiple playthroughs.
* The gen 2 Pokemon designs are some of my favorites (this one's more subjective) in the franchise.
* G/S/C fixed a lot of flaws and broken things about R/B/Y and introduced breeding, shiny Pokemon, and a lot of other new concepts.
* HG/SS incorporated all of the other really good developments from D/P/Pt, added a ton of new features like the Pokewalker and the Pokethlon minigames, and even restored other features that the original G/S/C couldn't fit like the Safari Zone.

G/S/C were pretty good, and HG/SS are up there with Platinum and B2/W2 as the best Pokemon main game experiences ever.
