I still don't understand why people are trying to conflate the covid relief bill with a healthcare bill.

The next four years are going to be nothing but these bad faith attacks against Biden from the left, who truthfully wanted Trump to win. Get used to it.

Amazing. Will America ever take even the tiniest of baby steps towards decent health coverage?

Not enough money in it.

This is the dumbest goddamn thing about insurance. I HAVE it so that I don't have to PAY these stupid fucking prices.
And this isnt even including the premium that you pay every month. I dont understand why any insurance plan needs both a premium and a deductible.

When I was first learning about insurance through my classes I was told that copays and deductibles and whatnot were invented in order to prevent people from abusing their insurance. Maybe that was true at the start, but that couldnt be further from the truth today.

But we all know how awful insurance is. The copays and deductibles. Networks you have to pay attention to. The possibility of needing prior Authorizations that could take a week or more (and possibly be denied and require an appeal, which can also be denied) just to get your meds and procedures covered.... what a joke.

Several years ago we had a patient in her 30s who was dying in the hospital of liver failure I believe. Her insurance required authorization before they would cover the life saving procedure. She died before it could get approved. Thanks insurance. Her death should be on their hands, but of course they get off scott free and dont have to worry about paying for that procedure anymore.

You think during a fucking pandemic nationalized healthcare would be a thing people want, but years of pro private propaganda have hammered in that it is evil.
It is what people want, but Biden doesn't care about what people want.

Thanks for the talking point david but it has nothing to do with what we're talking about.

But the purpose is to make it feasible for more people to sign onto health insurance in our current system? Is there a better way to deal with this without major healthcare reform, which isn't the purpose of this bill?

The framing only makes sense to me if the alternative was for him to push M4A or a public option through the covid relief package, but that's just stupid.
The reason I put my topic title the way I did is there was this narrative that people shouldn't worry about "infighting" on the left until after Biden was elected. Then would be the time to push him to the left. Now that he's introducing covid relief that's going to line the pockets of his health insurance donors, I'm noting a distinct lack of pushing him anywhere from the media class. I'm also noting that it seems there are some users who, no matter what criticism, seem to always find a way to excuse, deflect, downplay, etc. I'm not saying this bill should contain comprehensive healthcare reform. I'm noting that he's doing what he promised, and what people on the left expected him to do - he's making sure nothing changes. It's perfectly possible to note that that is very shitty without demanding that a covid relief bill should comprehensively reform the broken healthcare system of the US.

Seems pretty unfair to me. His covid relief package includes what amounts to universal child subsidies

I mean, I'm not directly involved in any of these conversations so I'm speculating, but the emphasis on tax credits (both the health insurance and child tax credit stuff) tells me they want to put something together that can pass through reconcilation. Which inherently limits how much you can change. Still I find it weird that so many leftists are so dismissive of biden when his plan does more to address child poverty since, well, probably ever

Probably? If that's your only metric then I think you should probably relax and take a step back

I, for one, will believe it will actually happen when Biden signs it into law in a socially-distanced Rose Garden ceremony. It's time for the Democrats to govern: they don't get credit for merely suggesting that we should maybe do good things, it's time to actually do good things.

Yeah, but your take is overly histrionic of you're saying this is some kind of proof he's not changing anything. Making the child tax credit fully refundable could easily become permanent. It's $3,600 a year, available in monthly payments, to the most vulnerable people in the country, not conditioned on income or employment. So that's a big, progresssive change in this legislative package

Also, like I said, this argument seems to hinge on the idea that a public option and the exchanges run counter to each other. But the way the public option would work in most public option plans I've seen is that it would be offered on the marketplaces. So bolstering the marketplace plans doesn't seem to contradict public option advocacy, though it's true it will enrich insurance companies - to the extent it succeeds at actually getting people covered.

I'm wanting to know why a universal child allowance isn't progresssive enough for you
