Should be a lifetime ban tbh.

Also this seems pointless beyond creating more work for Biden.

Unless they're going to use it as "well why hasn't Biden reinstated the ban on admin officials yet?" or some insane bullshit

This administration has actually been a pretty interesting thought experiment. Scientists and academics of the future will be able to use it as a control measure for any policy making in future, with this being the baseline for "exactly the wrong thing to do" in any given criteria, in order to measure how good or effective other measures are.

The reasoning I've heard it's that it will allow Trump admin officials to become lobbyists.

Not if Biden turns around and reinstates/reissues it with harsher/more restrictive wording

A blatant attempt at that, yes. It's not like Trumps policies have ever attempted to disguise what they actually are.

Not sure why he thinks it won't just get reversed though (hopefully anyway)

I'm sure Biden can revoke it, and it'll be in effect for 4 or maybe 8 years, until AOC makes it another 8 years.

This also sets the scummy precedent of signing EO's at the start of your term and revoking them before opposition takes power. Super stupid long-term decision from a man completely incapable of long-term planning.

Oh wow I didn't realize Trump himself signed the original one!

It was signed January 28th 2017. 8 days after his Inauguration. Revoked less than a day prior to his departure.

It's gross no matter what your party affiliation.

The entire EO mechanism needs a significant rethink.

lot of good points so far.

question though, if someone gets into lobbying before Biden reinstates it (if he does) would they be grandfathered into the role?

if so a day might be more than enough time to make whatever moves they need to. But I have no idea if it can terminate someone retroactively.
