26 people were murdered including 20 children. The Republican response was to do nothing and defeat any attempts of gun control including increased background checks.

President Obama cried during the press conference to discuss it and was mocked by conservative media.

Many Republicans would later deny the event happened and claim it was faked for political purposes.

The last thing we need to do right now is instigate the right wing by going after guns. Not only would nothing happen, but it would be a net negative for the right wing becoming less crazy. This would just rally them together.
