I know I'm 10 years late to the party, but still.

The big plot twist at the end with the apocalypse kinda ruined it for me. Like, the first twist that it was a reality show was great. But the fact they felt they need to up the ante and tie everything up using the end of the world as a means was just duuuumb.

Do I need to play Danganronpa 2 for story stuff? Or should I just move ahead to the anime prequel/sequel?

I was thinking of getting the sequel on my phone, but like I said, I dunno if it really plays into the sequel anime much.

That all aside, I did really love the characters. Was kinda hoping with the reality TV twist that it'd turn out that everyone was still alive.

No, the second one where things to start getting off rails for the sake of getting rails. Whoever fuckheads in charge in the story needs to be fired effective immediately!

Danganronpa 2 is absolutely important to the story.

I, initially, wasn't too into the apocalypse part of the story in the first game (mainly because I thought it jumped the shark with the silly Monokuma statues replacing national monuments), but DR2 converted me. It sucks that they force you to play the sequel for that info, rather than actually having a complete story the first time around, but it is what it is.

Fuck. I guess I'll have to play through 2 then. Was really looking forward to watching DR3.

I consider the ending to be in the Bottom 5 worst endings to a story ever for me personally, but I still don't think the game as a whole was that bad.

What didn't you like about them?

The characters are all 1-dimensional and irritating, the "mysteries" are so simple you can figure out most of them before the trial starts, the presentation is shoddy at best, the word "subtlety" is not in the game's vocabulary, and, obviously, the game's ending is really terrible. Again, 2 and v3 are better about all of these, but they're not exactly great.

The Danganronpa 3 anime has a conclusive ending; if you dislike DR1's ending, DR3 might be what you're looking for. Still, DR2 is required to understand/care about DR3.

The DR series loves to careen itself off the rails to pull off big twists at the very end.

I think a lot of those big twists fall pretty flat, but ehhh, I love the overall rides for DR games. The characters are fun and memorable, and I like solving mysteries and whatnot.

I prefer Ace Attorney overall, but DR is a great series.

Also, lower your expectations about the sequel anime now. It's absolutely atrocious, even if it does offer some answers.

DR2 has an overall better cast than DR1 I think, especially if you do Free Time Events, so you at least have that to look forward to. Gundham and Nekomaru are my favorite DR2 boys.
