It was a pretty close race between Petrify and Confuse, but Confuse takes the gold medal for worst status effect in in the FF series.

There are way too many summons, and iirc, every Final Fantasy has some unique ones.

Criteria is the same. Best based on your definition of best. Maybe it's best status effects that come with the summon? Most damage? Best looking? You decide, and nominate 3.

I get the feeling FF10 will take the gold medal in this one.

I don't use summons as often as I should.
That said, I haven't seen a bad Bahamas summon in any game I've played.
Though Doomtrain is amazing.

I think a hurt/heal would work well due to the amount of summons!

Odin, he has been imposing in every game as an enemy and the race against his zantetsuken ability in 4 is so intense when you play the first time.

And hes badass looking.

If you get Odin after he would have been replaced, you can keep him until the end of the game.

FF8 Cerberus.

Double and triple on everyone? Yes please. Get that Aura and Haste up ASAP.

Don't get me wrong -- Doomtrain is easily the second-best summon in the game by far, but you have Meltdown as a spell if needed, and no one gets your party to OP status like Doggo.

That being said, I am also nominating FF8 Doomtrain.

And then maybe FF11 Shiva just because.

Odin (FF4) - Not only do you need to find him and (ideally) find the one book that tells you his weak point, but half the time when you use him, he just flashes on the screen and disappears. But when he actually does slice up the enemies, goddamn is it satisfying.

Knights of the Round (FF7) - I really didnt want to vote for this. Its way too long, the damage is only useful in a handful of fights, and there is zero backstory to the spell... it just exists. I came into this topic wanting to vote for one of the Bahamuts just to keep out KotR. But this is all in retrospect. If we played this game for the first time in the 90s, when we first got this, it was a jaw dropper. It really was. Add that to the fact that the requirements to get it took forever (at the time), and it felt like an earned godly summon. It deserves a nomination.

Anima (FF10) - When she is summoned by Seymour in Luca, it was one of the top Holy shit moments in the series for me. The fact that you get to acquire her later in the game felt like a power trip.

Bahamut's been cool in all his appearances, but I have to specify FF 10's version as my favorite. He's literally a little boy's fantasy projection of himself as a kickass dragon (and to my knowledge is the closest Bahamut ever comes to having relevance to the plot), he strikes a great no-nonsense pose, and barely even flinches at attacks even though most projectiles end up hitting him square in the nuts. Plus it's my favorite visual design of Bahamut in the series.

Shiva gets my second vote (hard to choose between FF 8 based on attack animation, or FF 10 based on character design).

And I guess Alexander deserves my third nom (any variation).

I don't understand the love for Anima. It looks goofy af, and the animation when it's punching the enemy looks incredibly dumb. KotR I feel is a bit overrated as well.

I would nominate Ifrit across the entire Franchise. He has always looked badass, and wasn't ruined ever contrary to Shiva (Shiva sisters from XIII are a joke) or Bahamut (FFXIII Bahamut also looks like a turd).

Now, if this was about usefulness, just to be consistent with my vote in the best buff topic, I'd say Doomtrain. It's just way too good to boost damage.
