No.

Sometimes it can be shitty, but there's nothing inherently wrong with it.

No, most of the time it keeps what makes the hobby good intact.

Wrong? I dunno. But it's definitely self sabotage. Acting like an asshole, instead of just enjoying what you love and sharing it with others has to be less mentally rewarding.

Looking at a group of friends all enjoy something together, knowing you're too much of an asshole to ever let yourself have that experience. Cause you'll eventually turn any discussion into an argument.

Trying to keep others from joining in or picking up your hobby. Keeping it exclusive.

Depends on the hobby and the gate. Like, there is clearly a minimum threshold to pass before you can say you actually are a fan/hobbyist and not just a dilettante.

Granted, in the majority of cases its probably just people being jerks to feed their ego. If someone shows a desire to engage with a hobby, then even if their experience/commitment is low, it makes more sense to encourage them to continue engaging with the hobby so that they improve/become exposed to more of its depth.

I can understand where its coming. For example, Ive been bicycle trail riding since before COVID. Theres a much higher volume of riders on my local trails now and Ive noticed trail etiquette has gone down. Biker groups would take entire widths of trails, pass on tight single tracks, or dont move over when a faster rider approaches from behind. Ive noticed its especially worse with e-bikers.

Some principles will always be worth passing around - like music and art should always be something people try whether thats doodle or hum

but sometimes you see how things are changing - music for example isnt being revolutionized today through bands or the art form of playing an instrument

its being cut up and mixed in a way that was never really been approached and we have trap and rap to thank for that - its whats popular now and Im really glad for that actually

but a part of me knows how enjoyable it is to hold an instrument, to like really be into that - to really sit down somewhere outside with it in private is like about as close to religion and god as youre gonna get (to me at least)

you notice how much the world would get better if people played instruments and then you start saying shit like man fuck computers and technology then lol

being an elitist can sometimes be a funny thing

but gatekeeping is never a good thing :b
