I don't know if you're gonna try to get all 120 Shine Sprites but the Blue Coins are complete and utter trash and pretty much force you to use a guide to get them all. And yeah the Chuckster mission is notoriously horrid along with the poison river and pachinko machine.

I got the 120 on 64, Shnshine, and Galaxy (debating about doing it again with Luigi), and it was wild to me how bad Sunshine is. Impossible to find blue coins, annoying gimmicks, bad controls, glitchy af, etc. No wonder they didn't rerelease this game earlier <_< I'd also try to forget about it.

I've 100%'d SM64 multiple times ever since I got my 64 back in the late 90's.

Prior to the release of 3D Allstars, I've 100%'d Sunshine and Galaxy a grand total of once each both at their respective eras.

I remember getting Galaxy a couple of days earlier and I actually managed to get all 120 stars with Mario before the actual launch of the game lol

Anyway, I only 100%'d both games once because they were kinda a slog to get through unlike SM64 which only take a couple of hours at most.

So far in 3D Allstars I've only 100%'d SM64 and Sunshine.
I've only gotten around 25 stars in Galaxy though and I dunno why but I haven't quite had the energy to start get really into Galaxy yet.

As a kid, I liked Sunshine. I generally blamed myself for any gameplay issues I'd have.

As an adult, yeah, Sunshine really isn't great. There are a lot of issues, especially related to the controls/physics, that are more the fault of the developers than the player.

I'll piss off some people by also saying that Galaxy wasn't really that great either, but at least the issues I had with that game weren't usually controls issues, but rather its repetitiveness and little "wow" factor. It's hard to express. Maybe I just grew out of caring about 3D Mario.

It's been a while so I don't remember it a ton, but I kinda feel the opposite about it. It's almost too much wow factor, like they were constantly trying to introduce some big new concept or setpiece. 64 and Sunshine are much more repetitive, but in a way that's mostly a strength. I did enjoy Galaxy a lot but there are so many fleeting moments that they don't stand out the same way. It doesn't really help that Galaxy 2 is pretty indistinguishable from 1 in my mind other than I know 1 didn't have Yoshi.

I played it on that 3-in-1 cart and it sucks just as bad as I remember the last five minutes I gave it when it first came out. The graphics are awful (looks stretched top to bottom) and the controls are terrible. I really wanted to like it this time. I might finish it just to say I did, but its nothing like 64 or Odyssey.

I love Sunshine. Really underrated game. The controls are just really spot on and I love the level and world design.

My only real issue with the game is the blue coins. There's just way too many of them and there's no way to track which ones you already got which is really annoying.

They were, but I never felt that got tiresome. The paradigm for both games (smaller, self-contained levels with their own themes or gimmicks, generally tied together by the overall mechanic of accounting for unusual gravity) allowed a ton of room for creative, interesting level design, which was really showcased in that Galaxy 2 just did more of the same but still didn't run out of new ideas (technically Throwback Galaxy wasn't new, but I felt it was a beautifully executed piece of nostalgia). I actually would have liked to see a Galaxy 3 if they could have kept that up, but I recognize that that's a relatively unusual opinion.

OhhhJa posted...
Yeah without the nostalgia I'm sure its unplayable.

Honestly, camera issues aside, I don't actually find that 64 has aged as badly as people say it has. The level designs and platforming are still very solid by modern standards, the music's good, plenty of content with a solid range of difficulties, the graphics are easy to ignore because I know it's an N64 game (it's going to look bad. That's a given)... It's really mostly just that the camera has aged really poorly. It *works*, in that I never feel like it's impossible to manipulate it in a manner that allows me to do what needs doing, but it's completely unacceptable compared to even the standard set by Banjo Kazooie a year later, let alone modern analog camera controls. I don't think it's nostalgia making it playable so much as it is that people who played it before have had the necessary practice to be able to wrestle the camera into compliance without being turned off by how primitive it is.

Featuring elements from the game is not the same as rereleasing it. I never said they were pretending it didn't exist, just that they were aware the game itself was poorly made

I feel like the camera in Sunshine might honestly be worse. It easily gets stuck and doesn't go where you want it to, like if there's a wall in the way. I think that happened in 64 too but the levels were generally more open, so there weren't as many places for that to happen. I feel like the camera is better about automatically following you in 64 as well, which was probably more of an afterthought in Sunshine since it's free range.

Sunshine is a game that could and should have worked with more polish and playtests, rather than just cobbling together what they thought would work at bare minimum. Sunshine is a game that deserved better from its develops, even if a fair number of people might be into it. Instead, it's a mess that is loved by some and loathed by many others.

And that was before the lazy port of those three 3D games onto the Switch.

Thanks, Nintendo.

No. For one thing, Galaxy had a direct sequel. Both G1 and G2 were rereleased for the Wii U virtual console. G1 was also remapped and made available for android tablets in certain regions a few years ago.

I think it's either 60 or 70, it's a laughably small amount if you actually bother to check, but I usually have way more by the time I get to that point anyway.

Then again I don't think I've even touched 70 in Sunshine, I'm surprised you went as high as 85
