I think a big part of the problem is that the bar for an FPS game has risen so much since the days of Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark. Those games were popular because of the diversity of their weapon sandboxes. Goldeneye had Lasers, Proxy mines, a whole slew of hand cannons and explosives, the RCP80(?) and the horrible gun that was the Klobb.

Perfect Dark one-upped it with shit like the Laptop gun, the Dragon, The Foresight, etc. Hell, Perfect Dark had gamers dropping N-bombs before they even discovered racism.(What a weird ass weapon though.)

Nowadays that's not revolutionary. FPS controls have been pretty stable since Halo. You have to do something really innovative with the pacing, like Doom(gotta go fast) AND have a pretty dope weapon sandbox to boot.

My worries is that we'll get another generic shooter because they'll choose to go all in with the story/characters....which feels sorta like a lost cause in a shooter to begin with. Or at least an incredible uphill battle.

All people really want from a new perfect dark is

-Badass Joanna
-Good Weapon Sandbox(Give us some new ideas we haven't seen a dozen times)
-Consistent performance
-Decent/good Multiplayer
-Elvis.

That's it, really. Anything else is just Bonus

Goldeneye/PD didn't really care about gameplay balance because everyone playing was at different skill levels. No way an unbalanced weapon set will ever fly again, especially not an online one. It was essentially proven when PD was re-released on the 360.

Speaking of good ideas they should bring back... the mission objective / difficulty design. Harder difficulty settings give you new objectives which take you to new areas of a level.

They need to expand on what the orginal game did, all the options, the weapons, the bots, the story, and Elvis must return with his patriotic vest.

PDZ was a bad prequel and had almost nothing that fans liked about the original.
