Weird.

Also, they didnt credit any of the team?

...Also they fired the entire previous team?

...Also the Homestuck fandom is even more of a dumpster fire than before?

Im sad now.

Was looking into the credits thing because it sounds very messed up and uh....

https://twitter.com/homestuckteam/status/1332396685700591622?s=19

But I know for a fact multiple HS team I follow posted about their involvement, so...seems not that legit? I'm sure there are way more unknown people involved but what the hell is really going in here?

The common theory is that part of that statement is true, and its partly due to losing records of who actually worked on what due to all the firings and team switches

Oh yeah

I got the email about that, but it took so long (even for Act 1) that I no longer really care anymore. I never even actually finished Homestuck itself due to the huge pause he took at some point.

Sounds reasonable. I'm sure that there are an absurd number of NDAs floating around with the former workers and companies too. There's just...no way this was handled in the best way.

I feel like the post-Homestuck team has gotten such a raw deal. But Hussie got my money in 2012 and The Odd Gentlemen threw it in the garbage so I can't really do anything about it. Well, I subbed to their Patreon but that's it.

I gave to say, there is absolutely no way that reasoning holds up on its own because there were team members with no knowledge of it as well as the fact that it would be much simpler to make credits opt-in.

I know, I was amazed too. I will not repeat the drama because its all terrible, but it was a full on civil war with people involved stepping in, including Hussie himself. Its a colossal trainwreck, and impressive that after a decade Homestuck can not only still be the worst fandom, but actually get worse.

It's really something seeing the fandoms of things I liked once, fandoms that already had a terrible reputation, just get worse and worse over the years while I'm not paying attention to the point where everyone agrees they're irredeemable.

Homestuck proper is still one of the most important pieces of media to ever enter my life. Nothing can ever take that away.

I still have yet to engage with ANY of the post release content.

The sad thing is that back in the day I always felt that reputation that was a little unearned. The toxic elements were there for sure but the fandom was so vast you could engage in it without ever coming across that. Now thats most of whats left. Its a real bummer, and also accompanied by the thing itself becoming a shell of its former self after ending.

And now Hiveswap, which is actually good, is mired in external nonsense and may never finish. What a shame.

I do wonder if things would have been different if The Odd Gentlemen hadn't fucked everything over and the game released on schedule. I feel like that there was a planned train of content that was going to keep everything going stable post ending, but then everything was thrown out of whack.

They absolutely threw a spanner in the works, and Activision by extension did as well. However, doing the kickstarter so early, more or less on a whim, was a huge mistake. It basically ground Hussies progress on the story to a halt during the gigapause when there was supposed to be nothing but progress. And its the hiatuses, not the story itself, that kind of killed interest. If there had been one long break then everything was done? That would be fine, but there wound up being several.

It kind of made sense to do it when he did, when we all thought Act 6 was halfway done and the comic would be ending soon. But uh. Even ignoring the haitus downtime, the motherfucker started nesting acts more and the length ballooned even more out of control as usual.

Hussie needed to stick to an outline or an editor or something, but that wouldn't have really been Homestuck's style.

I enjoyed my time with Homestuck, but I won't lie if I say that the near end of the proper story soured me hard on it before factoring in the insanity that is what little I read of HS.

Homestuck was good times. Then the pauses hit, Then The gigapause hit. Then it ended. It probably should have stayed ended. Everything I hear post-end gnaws away at my fondly regarded memories. I should probably read Problem Sleuth again.

I reread most of Homestuck last year before outside stuff derailed the reread, riding in the hype of HS^2s potential before HS^2s reality became apparent, and Ill be honest:

Its still really good! It holds up and is a better story taken all at once. Honestly, just seal that off from everything else around it and its really great.

The epilogues and Homestuck 2 are essentially officially sanctioned edgy fanfiction. The epilogues in particular, if you know about those, but that is a LOT to unpack. Suffice to say most people weren't happy with the darker themes and certain characters getting shafted. Homestuck 2 is noticeably lighter but since it is a sequel to the epilogues it still has baggage. Personally I'm fine with this stuff being its separate thing but the tone shift is understandably divisive.

In addition it's just had growing pains and honestly just isn't very good. The pacing is weird, the schedule is slow and got slower because people unsubbed from the patreon, and even then the quality swings wildly with each update. If it wasn't obvious, most of this stuff is not actually written by Hussie, though he contributed the outline of the epilogues and some details for HS^2, all of which has been controversial. The fandom drama I know about revolved around a new character he had the team include. Brace yourself: it turns out that Jade and Rose had a secret baby together (normal baby, not ecto-baby, because Jade...is still fused with her dog) and their name is Yiffany Longstocking.

So yeah, I'd say it really leans into being fanfic. Homestuck remains a finished work despite the ending. The case the epilogues are making by filling in the plotholes is that it leads to all this.

I don't have an issue with it being elevated fanfic, but it just READS like it. Like Hussie just picked a random fanfic off whatever site those get hosted on these days and said "okay this one gets to be real." Everybody seems out of character, everybody gets to be LGBTQ+ in the most forced and hamfisted way possible, everybody turns emo, every character relationship has gone south since the original, and it just generally feels unfun and preachy and self-absorbed and unconnected to the original beyond the names. I didn't get super far in either the epilogues or 2, but neither seemed likely to change.

The Jade stuff is also directly contradictory of the main text, it really is just there for the edge.

I dunno if you blocked the last few act act acts of Homestuck from your memory but this all tracks with what Hussie was doing in the end.

You aren't really wrong about the rest, although I'm still an epilogue apologist since it at least knew what it was doing and did it in an interesting way. HS^2...does not know what is doing. It might have had an idea at the start but doesn't anymore.

Oh it was also a fairly common joke among the edgier part of the fanbase if you were lucky enough to never encounter that segment.

I am generally confused by the statement regarding "hamfisted LGBTQ themes" when the orientation of many of the humans was made relatively clear throughout, and the trolls themselves live in a society where gender is irrelevant.

Do we....do we need to go back to the charts?

There was exactly one hetero ship at the point the comic ended and even then it was playing with breaking up John/Roxy in favor of Roxy/Callie. Hussie joked about wanting to make everyone gay or LGBTQ and then actually did it by making Davekat real and having the characters monologue about it. It was not subtle!
