Theres plenty of great jobs out there you can obtain with just a HS diploma. Likely wont be any sorta comfy office job though but its good pay non-the-less.
So only rich people should be allowed to go to college right out of high school? Doctors, lawyers, engineers will be born rather than made.

Something has to change to make college non-discriminatory towards the less fortunate

That is what Buttigieg was arguing but people shit on him and actually demanded that the wealthier people get help instead.

College tuition for poor people is actually free because of grant aid, yet few ever take advantage of that because poor people don't generally make it to college to begin with.

It should be blind to your wealth. In practice though poor people:

Don't have access to pre-k education
Attend the worst public schools with no alternative
Don't have access to tutors, college prep classes, after school programs, counselors, etc
Do not have a parent that went to college themselves, education past high school is never even discussed as a possibility

For some reason though we've decided that the major issue with education in this country is that people who do get a degree have to pay it off themselves, even though a degree has never been more profitable.

I love how people making that argument are essentially making the equivalent of saying "fuck liability payouts to the families of the people that died on our watch even after we saved lives going forward." I don't know what it is about the idea that threatens people so much beyond it would mean for them a minor amount gained per month, but for others a big lump sum payment to have fun with right now. and they can't stand that thought. Either that or they don't want to admit others walked the same screwed up system and came out better because they didn't make the same choices (ie went to local school, worked over summer, didn't take an extra year to see Europe). I know people don't get it, but I do. On a smaller level example, I have a cousin owes my uncle money, and he'd be pissed to be forced to write it off when she had the chance to pay it back but thought a back tattoo was more important. (true example of poor priorities of people that are always broke).

And yeah, it does not address the bigger issue, but then, people want an easy self serving answer. The real one is to extend high school through to grade 16 at the same style of cost, and let post secondary go back to over achievers and rich snobs. But that wouldn't allow the "freer that living with your parents lifestyle" people like and would now encourage junk education as opposed to core subjects.

A lot of people don't realize how heavily tuition is subsidized for the poor because... they aren't poor. And most poor people don't make it into college to actually take advantage of it, unfortunately.

The whole narrative around student debt was created by wealthy people with graduate degrees who coincidentally came to the conclusion that we need to subsidize wealthy people with graduate degrees.

Shitty bandaid solution, go after the people/entities charging exuberant amounts if anything is to be done.

How does sending the message that it's ok to break legally binding contracts, consequence free, helping anyone?

Not to mention, are people being held at gunpoint to take out these loans?

I didn't read the thread to see if anyone else bothered pointing out that those legally binding contracts were pimped out by government employees on the public dime and that they also used predatory practices to take advantage of the public at large. So fuck those contracts. Dump them all. I give absolutely zero fucks if you or anyone else agrees.

What does it matter in the long run if a 18yo collage experiance is delayed by 2 or 3 years if it means they can avoid debt? Tons of young adults who join the military eventually leave, enter collage and obtain just such degrees minus debt. So implying the gates permanently closed to them makes no sense.

And good luck with the latter statement, private university, and esepcially ivy leagues will remain out of reach from all but the wealthiest, talented, or just luckiest individuals there are.

This is literally how Republicans sell trickle down economics. "We have to pass a bill that would give the majority of tax cuts to the wealthy because the poor would also be getting some relief."
