He did portray Anakin exactly the way George Lucas wanted him to per Lucas' own admission. The real problem was that George Lucas is introverted and somewhat bad at writing scrpits as a result. (Harrison Ford famously told him "You can write this shit but you can't say it George!" or something along those lines on the set of ESB.) Back in the OT he had other people to help him. But for the PT no one wanted to try to reign him in. Direction matters a lot for movies. Even top tier actors have delivered subpar performances under the direction of bad directors. But George Lucas did have an idea of what he wanted to do with Anakin. And that intention is still portrayed: Anakin is suppose to be awkward and confused because of his upbringing. He was raised to be chaste as a Jedi but as Yoda noted, he was too old. And already in love in Padme before he begain his training. And then there's the fuckery the Jedi and Palpatine were pulling on him..... Anakin is SUPPOSED to be not mentally sound. Because his entire life he has been subtly groomed by Palpatine AND became a powerful Jedi only to never get recognition from the Jedi Council who pretty openly hated him. (Working hard only to never get recognition would do a number on anyone. Even more humble individuals.) George Lucas is a great ideas man. (People DO consider the lightsaber fights to be the best parts of the PT.) But he needed other writers to help iron out his ideas as he had in the OT. But because George Lucas had so much clout and was a legendary director because of the OT, no one wanted to be the one to try to tell him "No. This is a bad idea." I still think George Lucas' base ideas for the story he wanted to tell were solid. Certainly better than TLJ and RotS at any rate. And I think a lot of people recognize that and that is why they warmed up to the Prequels over time. (That, and RotS was straight up a good movie. I don't care what anyone says.) TLJ was just an absolute clusterfuck.
