Yeah. I didn't make the connection until I was watching an episode of "What's my Line!" and he came on.

Who built the seven gates of Thebes?
The books are filled with names of kings.
Was it the kings who hauled the craggy blocks of stone?
And Babylon, so many times destroyed.
Who built the city up each time? In which of Lima's houses,
That city glittering with gold, lived those who built it?
In the evening when the Chinese wall was finished
Where did the masons go? Imperial Rome
Is full of arcs of triumph. Who reared them up? Over whom
Did the Caesars triumph? Byzantium lives in song.
Were all her dwellings palaces? And even in Atlantis of the legend
The night the seas rushed in,
The drowning men still bellowed for their slaves.

Young Alexander conquered India.
He alone?
Caesar beat the Gauls.
Was there not even a cook in his army?
Phillip of Spain wept as his fleet
was sunk and destroyed. Were there no other tears?
Frederick the Great triumphed in the Seven Years War.
Who triumphed with him?

Each page a victory
At whose expense the victory ball?
Every ten years a great man,
Who paid the piper?

Philip II of Macedon could be considered obscure since he's easily overshadowed by his son, Alexander III. Philip, depending on how to interpret him and our surviving sources, could be a barbarian warlord from the north who ended Greek freedom at Chaeronea or one of the greatest statesmen of the ancient world who managed to not only save his crumbling and backwater kingdom but also subjugate the Thracians, Illyrians and Greeks in the mainland and pave the way for Alexander's conquest of the Achemenid empire.

Still despite coming from an underdeveloped kingdom the areas of Thrace and Macedonia were some of the wealthiest regions in the balkans and along with Thessaly had some of the biggest population reserves in the Balkans so it's not all solely on his shoulders.

I think in the US, Olga of Kyiv is a good example.

There was a tribe of people that murdered her husband so she took the throne. And then this tribe kept trying to court her. I don't remember the full sequence of events, but some examples of what she did...

  • Invited a group of dignitaries to her palace. They arrived by boat. She had her people go out and pick the boat up and carry them to her and they were commenting on what a grand welcome it was. She had her guys dump them in a giant pit and bury them alive, and allegedly asked if the welcome was as luxurious as they had expected.
  • Invited another group of the "finest men" from the tribe that killed her husband to a grand feast, with the promise that she would select one to be her new husband. They came, ate, got drunk, then she invited them to a bathhouse... Locked them in and set it on fire.
  • And then she laid siege to the settlement where this tribe was and offered to end it if each household gave her a number of their finest pigeons and other birds. They were quick to accept. She then had little pouches of volatile flammable powder attached to the birds' legs and released them back into the town. They returned to their nesting spots in the houses and burned every one down.
She was later declared a saint in the orthodox church there >_>
