He's a billionaire running around beating up criminals, many of which are either mentally ill or poor/desperate. He saves The Joker and allows him to escape again, so he can continue to be the "hero" of Gotham. Maybe the man is just a giant egomaniac.

Of course. Batman is a criminal and belongs at Arkham.

Maybe Arkham Asylum and Blackgate Prison should get better security. The citys inadequate prison and hospital budget is the real villain.

Bruce Wayne could do something about it, but chooses not to.

There are actually several universes where Bruce Wayne turned into a villain. They ended up meeting each other across the multi verse and teamed up and attacked the main comic universe in an event called Dark Knights Metal. Their leader is Batman Who Laughs, a Bruce Wayne that basically got turned into Joker

It's pretty obvious that the small-scale (comparatively) stuff would be better handled if Bruce spent his money on social reform and infrastructure.

The crime and whatnot would be mitigated by that route.

Now, when Darkseid invades is when Batman becomes the right call.

I'm about 6 months from graduating with a Bachelor's in Social Work and I can tell you definitively that there is nothing in the curriculum to teach us to fight Parademons.

Maybe that's Master level coursework, I don't know.

I'm sure it does. There are probably conspiracy theories about the justice league and I bet low level criminals whine on the dark web forums about various heroes

Batmans presence creates the costumed villains of Gotham. In many continuities, none of those freaks like Joker or Poison Ivy or Bane showed up until Batman started to make a dent in mob crime. A new type of criminal was born to match this new type of justice.

Batman is just as deranged as the villains he fights. I like how Jason Todd put it. Batman blindly ignores the entire graveyards Joker has filled just so he doesnt break his moral code.

Would be interesting if someone in real life had moderate success fighting crime in a costume. Closest thing we had was Phoenix Jones, the Guardian of Seattle, and we all know how that turned out.

All thats suggesting is that it would be better for heroes to step aside and let the criminals rule Gotham, so then the criminals wont have to escalate into becoming super villains. Going by Batman Year One and other story lines, the criminal element has always plagued Gotham specifically, regardless of the presence of law enforcement, which were mostly corrupt anyway.

Hell nah. That's just the nature of comic book cities

Like 90% of Marvel's heroes live in NYC. How is that city not completely crime free

It wouldve been better for Bruce to try to change the system as himself rather than put on a costume and fight baddies. Personally, Id rather deal with mainly the mob instead of attracting what could arguably be considered far worse.

I think TAS episode had it right: these guys would have still been villains, they just might not have dressed up. Ivy would still be an ecoterrorist. Bane would still have been raised in Santa Prisca, and..well, Batman accidentally knocks Joker into chemicals a lot, so I guess that one's kind of on him.
