I don't think that twitter post in and of itself would stop me, but I haven't really been paying much attention to all of this since I stopped caring about Harry Potter a LOOONG time ago. Goblet of Fire is the last one I even remember actually watching.

This dropped a couple months ago, it fits this argument, and the basic thing is:

If you want to, you're going to, and no one can really stop you. You either legitimately don't care, or you've made justifications (death of the author, separating art from artist, minimal input from the creator), and again, this is you and what you've decided and, well, in a world of brands and products to consume that are coming at us faster than ever, you've decided that this brand was formative enough to you that you really need to spend time with it and who am I really to convince you otherwise.

The content of the video is really for those of us who are legitimately conflicted; those of use who allowed ourselves to grow and be shaped by Harry Potter in the past and are trying to figure out what to do with this new knowledge of Rowling and her values.

And the answer there is that you can't "safely" use an academic tool (like death of the author) to justify an emotional response. That's not logical, that's not academic. And that's what everyone who says "I'm going to play this" is having. An emotional response. Like, all we've seen is a pretty well-made trailer, so the actual knowledge of content of the game is thin so far. Committing to this game, especially at this point, is "it's Harry Potter and I want it".

And I get it. I have similar pulls about other media. For example, if it came to light that Yakuza series creator Nagoshi was an actual violent criminal, I'd have some serious soul-searching to do. I don't envy the position long-time Harry Potter fans are in.

That said I do in the barest sense have skin in this game, because I have content on this very site related to Harry Potter. What am I going to do? Well, for one I've decided I'm just not going to update those guides anymore, not that I ever had any real drive to in the first place. I could ask for the guides to be removed, but this wouldn't be a huge protest as it is because there are other guides for that game. Not to mention the guides' traffic numbers in the small double digits each day. Hardly my largest draw. Also I get no direct benefit from the guides being there. No monetization or anything like that. Basically, I'm in a decision limbo and for now I'm choosing inaction.

So at the end of the day, you basically have two choices: be a loyal consumer, or be a performative protester. It's going to be a drop in the bucket no matter what, and the only person you're going to satisfy is yourself and maybe the people closest to you.

So, do what feels most right to you. Just do so with all the knowledge available and not trying to be willfully ignorant.

But there are so many other people involved that also get money from it. Great people, probably even some trans people.

That's why I feel boycotting a product over the opinions of one person involved with it is silly and just hurts innocent people. Now if all the actors, the Harry Potter social media pages, Universal Studios, etc all came out and said they stand with and support JK Rowling's opinions, then boycott away.

I'm all for equal rights. We're all born the same species and I believe everyone deserves the same opportunities if they're willing to work for them. (And from a jobs perspective, are qualified) The notion however, that minorities deserve special rights or free handouts is absolute bullshit.

It's really not though. We've already had someone expressing a desire to attack trans people ITT. This is the kind of person Rowling has ultimately chosen to align herself with and it's not at all a secret that's what they are. That's why this shit is not a joke.
