So glad I moved out of that city in 2011. Place sounds like hell and can't believe normal citizens are capable of getting around and living normal lives with this kind of atmosphere. Prove me wrong.

My brother lives there, I went to visit him last year and it was pretty sad to see what the city has become. Even the traditional restaurants and stuff I loved visiting when I was a kid and I went to see him were all swapped out for like some worse version of their previous selves, it was weird.

I don't know how he still lives there, think it's because his wife's family is in the area.

Portland shows how much hate a city can breed over a relatively short amount of time.

I drove through the city recently. And it looked gorgeous from the highway. But after a while more and more homeless people, tents, vehicles started to appear.

I'm assuming gentrification has taken it's toll on the city.

Well I was only there for a brief amount of time so I didn't get to see all of the old haunts, just based on what my brother said, stuff like Rocco's Pizza shut down/became some more uppity pizzeria (looking it up that happened apparently like 10 years ago, jeezus I haven't been there in ages).

Still loved the people though, and liked being in a town where businesses openly advertised their hatred for Nazis and support for minorities and stuff. Don't see a lot of that in Maryland >_>

What part of Maryland are you in?? I'm close to the DC area and support for minorities and BLM is huge. Every other neighbor has a BLM sign and neighbors are diverse and super chill. So I'm surprised at your comment. But I can imagine other parts of Maryland might not be that way. I'm just curious, that's all.

Just by Annapolis. Also haven't gotten out much since the lockdowns began so I'm kind of insulated. Since you mention it there was a BLM protest by a church in my area a couple months ago, was pretty cool. Just like a dozen or so people on a small residential road by a church but I thought it was still a good sight.

Also maybe just never noticed it here, but when I was in the Seattle Airport they had gender free bathrooms advertised as safe spaces and in Portland the shops had anti-Nazi stickers up and "We welcome <list of everyone else>" signs.

Haven't seen a lot of that in MD but probably am not looking hard enough. Also this was before all the protesting began this year so maybe things changed here, too. I have been reading how they are dedicating / dedicated a mural to Breonna Taylor in Annapolis.

a friend of mine lives in the portland area - minutes from where i grew up 20+ years back, actually - and he says that the state of affairs in portland proper is not nearly as bad as it looks

he hypothesizes that the turbulence is probably confined to a small area, and blown out of proportion by the media

lmao I live 15 minutes from the protests. Tales of the city being overran are absurdly exaggerated.

homelessness is always gonna be an issue in areas where one can live outdoors virtually year round
