Maids and butlers aren't really equivalent to one another. A maid is just a female servant. A butler is a head servant.

Not necessarily. If you house is small enough you probably don't have any use for a head servant. Also I meant to say a butler is a Male head servant. A housekeeper is the term for a female head servant although these days it's also used as a gender free term.
