I mean yeah. He was one of history's biggest mass murderers

Dan Carlin brought this up many, many, many years ago in his podcast analyzing Ghengis Khan and at one point noted that the passage of time often softens people on death counts. We still feel the pain of the Holocaust today because it's very recent, but the mass killings done by Ghengis Khan were so, so long ago that we take a more clinical approach and end up disregarding the death and suffering he caused.

It's interesting to think about but with OP not providing context it doesn't really matter lol Ghengis Khan was evil

It's very both sides to try and equate Ghengis Khan to every other medieval leader. The times were violent, but he was not even close to the norm.

Things were more violent, but Ghengis Khan was highly exceptional for the period.

he did the same thing as any of them, he was just more successful at it

Another way of reading this is "He was significantly more violent than any of his contemporaries."

I'm not saying we should "cancel" him I'm saying views on his atrocities are interesting thought experiments. The twitter thread in question had people ironyposting

Evidently his social impact isn't the same as praising people like Robert E. Lee who are still relevant to American society

So should we not celebrate Obama in the future?

He was ordering drone bombings left & right that killed several hundreds of innocent bystanders. So much to the point that in Pakistan the children are growing up fearing blue sunny days (optimal weather for bombing weddings & funerals).

This is a slippery slope and its starts with going after Kamala Khan

It's a bit easier to disconnect from atrocities 800 years ago when brutal conquest was the norm of expanding regions.

Social norms weren't exactly against Genghis Khan wiping out the Khwarezmian empire. He sent enjoys who were tortured and killed, which is like an open invite to say "destroy us"

Genghis Khan is on Mongolian money, how is the most well known Mongolian man not relevant to society?

I totally understand why they put him on money, it would be like Greece putting Alexander the Great on their stuff.

I really don't have a problem with that.
