He was one of history's biggest mass murderers Dan Carlin brought this up many, many, many years ago in his podcast analyzing Ghengis Khan and at one point noted that the passage of time often softens people on death counts. We still feel the pain of the Holocaust today because it's very recent, but the mass killings done by Ghengis Khan were so, so long ago that we take a more clinical approach and end up disregarding the death and suffering he caused.
