It's their job, they should earn enough not to be corrupted by outside money. If they earned less, the job would be relegated to people who can afford to go 2-6 years with minimal income.

that really isn't that much. Especially not considering those are top level positions in their fields and many of those people probably get all sorts of threats regularly.

There's a whole lot of gray area between minimal income and $174k. Shave off $100k and they'll still be more than comfortable.

If they earned minimum wage maybe they'd be more likely to raise the minimum wage or give more benefits to those making that much.

In my defense, I live in Virginia, where the salary for a state senator is about $20K. It's an unnecessary barrier to working-class people.

dont they have to foot the bill for a lot of their own expenses? traveling back and forth to washington isn't cheap, plus the added expenses of maintaining two residences.

Fair enough, I didn't know Virginia was like that. What other states are like that?

With the type of people the job attracts, the amount of money will never be enough to not be corrupted.

You can be a fill in senator after a person gets elected for another position and still get the lifetime payment of $200K. That position isnt elected either, the leaving member gets to pick. Kamala Harris gets to pick her replacement.
