Ive seen a few places say to use exact change because COVID is creating a coin shortage. I never thought I would see that in my life. Just pointing it out

What coin shortage?. The FRBs are overflowing with so many presidential dollar coins that they had to discontinue the program before they even got to all the presidents because nobody wanted to use them. Same thing with half-dollar coins. They have so many half-dollar coins that they haven't had to produce any since 2001.

How is there even a coin shortage though? Unlike paper dollars, most coins can last about 30x longer. It must be because most people aren't using cash during this pandemic and thus, no change is being created.

I would guess because people get coins as change, and never bother to spend them. So they're all sitting around not being used.

Definitely. On a personal note, I love coins. Used to collect them. Still have a solid collection of silver dollars, susan b anthonys, most of the statehood quarters, etc etc. I have coins pre 1965 (or whatever it is) where they're still mostly made of silver. Coins are so much cooler than cash.

There's no shortage of coins, they're just not circulating because everyone's paying digitally. Experts are calling it a "circulation disruption", but I suppose that's not "sexy" enough for memes and headlines.

Every now and then, we're supposed to take a bucket of coins to the bank and cash in. That's just not happening.
Also the mint was shut down for a couple months.

Now, were there's a 10% premium or so for bringing in a bucket or two or spare change...

Yeah, I've been having to deal with it for a couple weeks at my job. Having to explain it like 15+ times every day gets tiring, especially when some customers get mad at me. It's like...it's not my fault I don't have change.

No one should be using coins or cash. It's not sanitary. Contactless paying or preferably ordering online.

But how else can I do things like buy drugs, pay off undocumented workers, give service workers incomes they don't need to declare for taxes, or similar peer to peer transfers like yard sales/craigslist/etc?

I just had a flash back to my first shitty casual basis work I did in my first year of university, where I was a cashier for one of the fast food stalls at the local stadium. They gave us a set amount of coinage in our til to be used as change which usually wouldn't be an issue unless it was really busy. But the actual chuckle fucks of the company had the audacity to but a 10% surcharge (or something like that) on public holidays when sporting events often were held, WITHOUT any change to how many coins we were supplied with. So inevitably we ran out of coins for change which made my job painful as they barely trained us so I didn't know whether to over change, under change or refuse service in that scenario

Eliminate sales tax, as a concept, and the need for change will largely evaporate if the $#.99 psychological trick also goes away as a concept.
