Meanwhile every decent job requires at least a bachelor's degree

Fix that second part and the first line could actually be true.

idk nothing in my field requires a degree, just certifications and extra schooling that aren't college

if I had instead focused on certifications for four years I could have pretty much any cool high paying blue collar job

That first line is an exaggeration. Yes it is definitely possible to get a well-paying job as a blue collar worker. But if you are not a blue collar worker the line becomes very accurate.

To be exact, it should really say "so many jobs require at least a bachelor's degree"

That's a stupid requirement.
My job requires degrees for certain departments but I know a bunch of people in those departments that dont have degrees.

Looking at college as a money in-money out investment is the problem

there is more to life than making as much money as possible. If youre interested in a topic, and college allows you to become more knowledgeable and involved with it, then go, regardless of any angry middle aged people going youre not going to make much money!!!

This has been thrown out the window thanks to the internet. There are some exceptions (labspace and expensive equipment), but a lot that was only available in a college 30-300 years ago is now available on the internet.

Combine that with the extreme rise in costs of going to college and you see how going to college vs. not going has become a major issue.

I agree on principle. The problem is when it comes to tuition assistance. If you believe that the purpose of college is to pursue further knowledge in things you are personally interested in, then that shouldn't be something that the rest of the country should subsidize.

It's one thing to ask the rest of the country to help pay for your $100,000 degree because it is an absolute necessity to break out of your current working class. It's another to ask them to do it because you find the subject personally interesting.

It really isn't.

The curriculum of every gen ed course is available online. Decades and centuries of research is readily available online (although not for free in most cases). People knowledgeable in every possible subject are one email away from talking to.

He wasnt talking about general ed genius. And no, its not the same. Theres a reason someone who has spent a lot of time reading about a subject online is neither as educated nor as recognized as a phd in that subject (or even a ba). College teaches you how to think, how to research, the collaborative effort is a big part of the learning process

Even beyond labspace and research opportunities (which is a giant thing!), there's something to be said about being guided through material by an expert in the field. You are just very unlikely to receive the same feedback and guidance through the material trying to self learn.

I mean, I totally agree that the job market setting degree requirements that are simply unnecessary is pretty fucked.

It puts people in debt that shouldn't need to be in debt, and dilutes the good teaching and learning that can be done at university m.

Is this going to be like that "blue-collar business owner" who claims people turn down jobs from him for $1,200 per week because it's hard work?
