Weird to be summoned here. I don't actually play 5e. Heck, I've not even read the rulebooks - I'm not a huge fan of D&D to begin with and also there aren't that many people to play with anyway.

At any rate, I tend to play magic users or rogue-type characters in video games. Just feels like they give me the most options. I did love how D:OS worked in more tactical variety for all classes so I might consider something different but my first instinct would be some sort of wizard or something.

No kidding.

Take spells for example. Across the entire line of 5e books, there's only something like 492 spells. Occult Philosophy - which is just one book for the Shadow of the Demon Lord TTRPG - has over 800 spells in it. And if you use all of of SotDL's books, there's a total of just over 1,500 spells in the game.

I mean flipping hell, that's outright embarrassing for 5e! Why does it have so few spells? Thanks to that, almost every Warlock just uses Eldritch Blast all the time. Same thing with Clerics and Toll the Dead. That gets boring really fucking quick.

There's little to no spell variety between magic-users in 5e, especially ones who belong to the same class. All 5e Wizards are just glorified pallette swaps of each other, there's no real variety or distinctive character options to set them apart.

In SotDL, magic-users have tons upon tons of options to set them apart from each other, just based off the amount of spells in the game alone. But then if you also consider how classes and magic traditions work in SotDL, you're looking at a system that has almost literally infinite possibilities for magic-user builds.

Anyway, on Topic, I can't imagine how this video game would actually work. I mean, we've already pointed out how limited 5e is, and that's the TABLETOP version. Video games are always going to be WAY more limited then TTRPG's.

Just imagine a video game RPG where there's only 12 classes (assuming they actually ship the game with all the TTRPG's content) and each of them have next to no features or abilities whatsoever. With spell slingers whose best option is to just spam the same one spell over and over. LMAO, even the SNES Final Fantasy games can boast a better combat system then that! What are Fighters going to do? Just move up to an enemy and spam the attack button? Yeah, that sounds fun, for maybe ten minutes...

At least in the tabletop version of 5e, you can try to ignore the rules and pull off cool tricks and called shots or whatever, if your DM allows it, but no video game is going to be able to do handle that amount of improvisation.

Because they are the best digital representation of a physical medium, and are celebrated for the characters, setting, and story. It's why people wax poetic about Planescape Torment. Fallout falls into the same category. They aren't your cup of tea, and that's fine. Your dissatisfaction in them doesn't preclude other people's enjoyment of them.

There's nothing stopping you from enjoying the tabletop experience. There are more significant barriers of entry to D&D the tabletop game than there are D&D video games. Shit, I wonder how many people started out playing D&D video games before playing D&D themselves. Even if the games lack imagination and scope, the stories and characters are usually engaging enough.

When I first heard about D&D, it was when AD&D was the big thing. All the literature revolved around dungeon spelunking and fighting monsters for treasure. That wasn't even remotely interesting for me. As a result, I never got into the gold box games. I hate dungeon crawlers, especially first person ones. The first D&D experience I got into was Dark Sun Shattered Lands on PC.

It took until 3.5 Edition for me to see that there was more to the game than just dungeons & dragons. Now the game is more about role-playing and accessibility, as opposed to dungeon delving and twinking your character. Wouldn't have found it if I didn't have a budding interest in the game from the PC games.

One of the issues with D:OS2 was that you get less dialogue and quest options if you made an OC, but I've heard they're trying to rectify that for BG3.
