4 is better just because better socialising, but its actually 3 because otherwise the board gets too crowded.

I've never played root but even something relatively light like Puerto Rico can really get bogged down when you have 4 or more imo. I will say a lot of this is about your play group, too. Three is fun but I think I prefer how crowded the board gets with four, and kinda dislike how long the game goes with five/six because of the extra post-turn build phase. Big fan of two as well.

I find 3 if you want a more casual experience, especially with friends and whatnot and you aren't looking to be real competitive. 4 is probably the best standard for competition and strategy.
