IMO 4 or 5 players is always the best number for any board game

It just depends. I find that 3 is best with heavier games with longer turns, personally. But it's variable

4 is better just because better socialising, but its actually 3 because otherwise the board gets too crowded.

Yeah sometimes 3 is good when the turns can take a while. I played this game called Root and with only 3 people that game felt like an absolute slog so it would have been worse if we had more.

I've never played root but even something relatively light like Puerto Rico can really get bogged down when you have 4 or more imo. I will say a lot of this is about your play group, too. I mean he's not called analysis paralysis Alex for nothing

Three is fun but I think I prefer how crowded the board gets with four, and kinda dislike how long the game goes with five/six because of the extra post-turn build phase. Big fan of two as well.

I find 3 if you want a more casual experience, especially with friends and whatnot and you aren't looking to be real competitive. 4 is probably the best standard for competition and strategy.

Big can of Catan, been playing it for years.

Four.

My experience with three players is that one person just gets way ahead of everyone else. Four player games tend to be fairly close.
