Those places don't have work. And if you are commuting long distance for your work, your costs are increasing with car maintenance and gasoline, not to mention generally just losing free time for a second job or mental health(most min wage workers need one because most min wage jobs are not full time).
We're talking minimum wage labor here. You don't have to go to NYC to find a McD.

The cost of living is prohibitively expensive. It's not a question of whether people can find a means to survive, because they clearly can, it's a question of whether this is the sort of society we want to live in. People aren't getting married. They aren't buying houses. They aren't having kids.

Having a kid costs something like $35,000 just to get through pregnancy. I never want to hear a boomer talk about bootstraps again.

This is why it's an outrage that a garbage apartment costs like $500 minimum and why it's not a "luxury" for your housing costs to ideally be no more than 30% of your income.

If you're spending $500 out of $800 a month, you're not able to save money for a down payment on a house. You can't finance a new car. You can't buy consumer goods. You can't raise a kid. The economy will absolutely collapse if this is allowed to continue. People can't live like this.

What this article is saying is, actually no there isn't

the article is saying, a single person on min wage can't afford a 2 bedroom apartment alone and keep 70% of their income for not rent.

What most in this topic don't realize is that what the article does say, is 2 people can afford a 2 bedroom apartment and keep 70% of their income for not rent, which is not the point you want to make for increasing minimum wage (which is long over due to be increased to somewhere around $9-11, with cities needing to individually be above that, it also should automatically adjust with inflation every 3-5 years)

A lot of people are ignoring this too. My current apartment requires proof that the rent is not more than 30% of your monthly salary. You will be completely barred from some apartments even if you make "enough" to pay the rent but fail to meet this standard. This is even with roommates (mine requires everyone living in the apartment to meet this minimum separately).

It's interesting how most people who read this headline come to the conclusion that wages must be low, and not that housing cost might be inflated.

To be clear, only 2% of the US workforce works for the minimum wage. Half of them are under 25 which means they are likely to be in college, have roommates or not live on their own at all. Got to put clickbait headlines in context.

To get a better idea of what the typical American is making you would want to look at median income. Then factor in our taxation system which is far more progressive than what you typically see in places like Europe and you find that only a few countries have higher incomes than the US does:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Median_income#Median_equivalent_adult_income

We're comparable to places like Norway and Switzerland while a typical person in the UK or France makes 10k less than their American counterpart! Wages are very high in the US.

So income isn't the main reason why many in the US struggle with housing cost even when they have a decent paying job. The truth is we have a massive housing shortage here, and the biggest shortages are in the urban areas that are creating the most jobs:

https://i.imgur.com/xeQ4NTI.png
https://i.imgur.com/uBtolAV.jpg

You can blame our ridiculous zoning laws for that. Local governments in these cities are intentionally limiting the supply of housing, mainly because it benefits current homeowners.
