Atlas Shrugged

Ayn Rand had a small cultish following kinda like Freemasons in that it's a group of like minded people that got together to wax philosophy with each other.

Anyway a disturbingly large amount of people connected with that group are now in high places in politics and they've spread their Objectivism with their authority.

No, American core values shifted very heavily from collectivist to individualist around this time.

Young children working endured some of the harshest conditions. Workdays would often be 10 to 14 hours with minimal breaks during the shift. Factories employing children were often very dangerous places leading to injuries and even deaths. Machinery often ran so quickly that little fingers, arms and legs could easily get caught. Beyond the equipment, the environment was a threat to children as well as factories put out fumes and toxins. When inhaled by children these most certainly could result in illness, chronic conditions or disease...

Reforming child labor laws and creating new laws that would enforce a minimum working age, prohibiting dangerous jobs and conditions and establishing maximum hours children could work was not a popular endeavor. It took several years and many attempts by Congress to pass national laws designed to improve working conditions and regulations relative to children in the workforce.

Lmao, America was still very much a collectivist society up until after WWII. Hell, in the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 - 1920, it was considered very American and patriotic to wear a mask and prevent your neighbor from getting a disease.

Have a good night.

The depression in the 1930s was caused by excess expansion of credit during the 1920s. This over-extension by banks caused an unnatural disequilibrium in the money markets that initially caused a boom then a bust. ... People withdrew money from banks, and banks went out of business.

Bro, no fucking shit consumerism existed and didn't have the checks and balance to prevent a depression. My point is individualism wasn't as rampant among society, add individualism on top of rampant consumerism that started to take place after WWII, and you have a fractured society that has lost the strong core family unit and connection to greater society as a whole.

Guys you already have your answer.

After WW2 much energy was spent on idealizing and idolizing private property to entrench anti communist beliefs. This hit a peak in 1957 with Ayn Rand and Objectivism. Objectivism is the "fuck you I got mine" and "every man for himself" philosophy. It is not capitalism nor is it any of the myriad political philosophies that existed between the founding if the country and the cold war.

In truth, the dominant philosophy for hundreds of years was "no man is an island"

"Fuck you I got mine" is extremely recent.

IMO modern american consumerism was largely formed by changing the way people advertised products/services, thanks to people like Edward Bernays starting around the 1930s. That was when they started shifting advertisements from purely "buy this because [benefits of the product]", and instead it became more psychological. Like how they managed to convince people that the type of car you own says something about your manhood.

People who, of course, inherited their wealth, basically don't do anything, and cause harm to the world in their worst moments. They're a lot like some of our Founding Fathers, and other millionaires and billionaires.

"Rugged individualism" has always been a euphemism for shoving your fat, baby powder smelling rich ass into people's face in order to be first in line, avoid responsibilities, and reap the rewards of other people's hard work. It implies that our civilization is just some wilderness that needs to be conquered, but of course, the wealthy and the privileged have made it illegal for anyone to take that to heart and use it against them. Convenient.
