In the last 20 years there has been like 3 great ones. A few more if we count the racing games.

Then when they finally find something that works...it gets abandoned or brought back in a shittier way.

They couldn't make the transition to 3D. Like Mario and Zelda was able to.

Its hard to capture the speed Sonic has in 3D. Its been done to varying degrees but its hard to top Sonic 2 and 3+Knuckles

I'd be happy with some more great 2D games like Donkey Kong and Kirby at this point.

6 years between Sonic Generations and Sonic Mania and they're still both 'Best Of' Sonic games.

No it's not. Shitty ass incomplete fangames do it just fine. Sega could easily just expand on the concept of the wanted to buy they don't.

I think the main thing is that Sega never really settled on what they wanted Sonic to actually be.

Sonic Adventure 1/2 was its own thing. Heroes was its own thing. 06 tried to go back to Adventure, but it bombed, and instead of learning from their mistake (not greedily rushing out a glorified beta to get Holiday sales) they decided to experiment again and came up with the Boost formula for Unleashed. But they couldnt just do the speed sections because they had made him so fast that it became too expensive to make levels that supported that speed. So they added a beat-em-up section that wasnt terrible, but clearly meant to be filler. And then they tried to combine the boost formula with 2D sections with Colors and Generations because all the fans liked the 2D games coming out at the time.

But then for Sonic Lost world, they saw how successful Mario Galaxy had been with playing around with the gravity/physics of the world, and decided to do something similar to that, while still shoehorning in 2D segments.

And then they wanted to do spin-offs with Sonic Boom, which would have maybe been okay if the main series wasnt mostly absent during that time.

And *meanwhile* during this whole time after they completely neglected the supporting cast, either ignoring them completely or shoving them into weird, non-traditional gameplay segments that werent necessarily bad, but are not the reason anyone wants to play as Tails, Knuckles, etc.

aaaahhhhhhhh
