Welcome to the King of Fighters 2020 (NOT MERCS) Simulated Character Battle Tournament!

The game is simple. The two* listed characters are placed in an (imaginary) location with a variety of (imaginary) environments, kind of like a picture in a child's schoolbook that describes different types of geological features. Within a ten mile radius, there is an (imaginary) urban downtown, exurbs, plains, snow-clad mountains at the edge, dry plains, etc. Fighters start wherever is most appropriate for them, but feel increasingly compelled to seek out their opponent and fight. Strong-willed fighters can try to hold out in their chosen environment for longer... eventually, all will succumb and actively search for the other to battle.

To participate, just vote in bold for whichever character you believe will win. Giving reasoning is optional, but please be polite and read what others have said and carefully make your decision. I'll ping the nominators (they can opt out) to give arguments if they wish.

Neo outside the Matrix seems like a weird choice for an entrant. What does he even do outside the Matrix?

This seems like a match between ordinary people with a moderate level of physical ability. Could be missing something though.

Well for one, Genocide Jill uses scissors, not knives, but that's nitpicking. She does have experience fighting against killer robot bears, but I'm not overly familiar with Ultra Despair Girls

Good catch, thanks. And I forgot about Ultra Despair Girls. Here's what Jack/Jill does for combat in that game:

On the other hand, the player can also choose to call upon the invincible Genocide Jack, who carries her "Genoscissors" and a stun gun which allows her to go on a rampage and destroy all the Monokuma Units around her. However, the player can only use Genocide Jack for a limited period of time. Once the batteries are drained, Genocide Jack will immediately revert back to Toko. The player can revert Genocide Jack manually to preserve batteries. On Genocide Mode, the batteries will regenerate when using Komaru, but on all other modes, batteries can only be replenished by collecting battery drops from MonoMono Machines.

Genocide Jack's normal attacks include a basic melee combo, whose length can be upgraded by buying upgrades from shops, and through a charge attack. The charge attack functions differently and does more damage the longer it's charged. A short charge results in Genocide Jack throwing scissors in all directions and is effective at close range. A medium charge results in Genocide Jack flipping upside down and flying forward while spinning like a top while slashing, cutting a wide swath through enemies. At full charge, Genocide Jack flies forwards while spinning like a drill, punching through any enemy in her path. Being attacked will cancel any charge. Upgrades also exist for both charge attack damage and charge speed.

In addition to her normal attacks, Genocide Jack can also use special moves using Slash Lust. The Slash Lust gauge is indicated by a row of scissor symbols at the bottom of the screen while Genocide Jack is active. Slash Lust charges by using normal and charge attacks to kill Monokumas, and both the charge rate and the maximum capacity are upgradeable. When using Slash Lust, the player must first lock onto a target. Two types of Slash Lust attacks are available. The first uses only a single unit of Slash Lust and targets a single enemy. The second uses three units and can target up to five enemies. Once activated, Genocide Jack jumps off-screen, and then an automated sequence is shown in which she attacks the targeted enemy.

I would assume it's just gameplay, given that she's just as much at risk of being killed off as the other students in the first game.

I asked the question for a reason! I've never seen The Matrix and I always figured Neo's entire set of powers came from it.

I don't really feel like rereading the chapters, but looking at the wiki that doesn't seem quite right.

The group summons their Stands in order to attack, but Telence reveals that Atum had earlier ensnared Star Platinum's arm. Telence can now break it at any time, forcing the group to listen to his demands. Like his brother, Telence loves to gamble and so the group will have to gamble their souls over video games.

So basically they only agreed to the games because it was that or he breaks their best fighter's arm, and that's not something you want happening when you're storming the main antagonist's mansion.

He can grab a portion of their soul which is very nebulously defined, especially in regards to non-Stand users, and a match that was 80% "would <x> even care if they lost their soul?" is horribly uninteresting. A small extension to a user's powers so that they'd make sense in this format is very different than "ok we're in the matrix now surprise" (and I would have considered making it the Matrix if people had argued for it in my multiple suggestions/help topics)

Genocide Jill specifically only kills hot guys and fought several giant mechs with scissors. I think Keanu Reeves is hot enough to fall into her standards to murder him. I'm pretty sure she can stay transformed indefinitely as long as there is a hot guy around that she wants to kill and she does not sneeze.

DanganRonpa is dumb.

I'm vastly unimpressed by the insane scissor weilder, and seeing clips of game/fmv/boss, I don't see anything that impressive to the point that can't be overwhelmed by raw combat experience and normal weaponry. Add to that Toko tries a LOT to not let crazy out. Neo

Neo's powers are to fly and kick people across rooms and stop bullets midflight etc etc and he can't do that here!

So apparently when Neo fights in the real world, he has telekinesis and can sense machines and programming. He's also blind. How does that affect his fighting abilities?

The Matrix movie has two realms: it has the Matrix, and it has the Real World. In this Real World, Neo had martial arts knowledge downloaded directly into his brain. This is not possible in our real world, but it is possible in his Real World. It is possible in the Reality of his Universe. Toko can turn into a demon because it is possible in the Reality of her Universe. Mewtwo can teleport and use psychic powers because it is possible in the Reality of his Universe.

Giratina's strongest powers are available only in the Distortion World. This isn't the Distortion World, so when he's not there, he cannot use those powers. Rand can change the world just by thought in the Dream World. This isn't the Dream World, so when he's not there, he cannot use those powers. Giratina can only use the powers available in his Real World. Rand can only use the powers available in his Real World.

This contest doesn't take place in our Real World. It takes place in the collective Realties of the collective Universes of the contestants. If there is a greater Real World that the works take place in that's far from the focus (eg Narnia) or the characters only exist in the Sub World (eg, MMBN, Chalkzone), it'd be more fair to consider the powers of the characters in their primary setting. The Matrix isn't solely about the Matrix. It's about the Matrix and its place in the Real World.
